The wait between seasons for the hit Netflix series The Watcher has been painful, as it has reached the four-year mark since the renewal for Season 2 was announced. The good news is that the second season is finally making traction with Jennifer Coolidge’s return now officially confirmed.
It was recently reported that Netflix would start production on The Watcher Season 2 in New York this fall. Also revealed was that the second season would bring back several stars of the first, including Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Margo Martindale, and Isabel Gravitt. It was not stated if Coolidge would also be coming back for the new season. However, an update posted by Netflix confirmed that production has officially begun while also verifying that Coolidge will, in fact, return in Season 2.
Karen Calhoun Returns in The Watcher Season 2
In the first season, Coolidge played Karen Calhoun, an eccentric real estate agent who sells the house that Nora (Watts) and Dean Brannock (Cannavale) presume will be their dream home. After the couple moves in, they begin to receive disturbing letters from an unknown person calling themselves, “The Watcher.” The letters become increasingly threatening as the Brannocks investigate their neighbors and the home’s history, hoping to find some answers about who’s secretly terrorizing them.
The Watcher is based on true events. The real-life case that inspired the series remains unsolved, so there’s no telling where the story will go for Season 2 of the TV show. Netflix has not divulged any information yet about the plot for the new season. All that’s known is that several original stars are coming back to continue the story.
It Has Taken 4 Years for Production to Start on Season 2
The first season debuted on Netflix in Oct. 2022. Its renewal was officially announced less than a month later. At the time, it was also revealed by Netflix that Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was continuing as an anthology series. While that show has since had three additional seasons focused on different stories, The Watcher went dormant for four years. With production finally underway on the new episodes, the long wait is getting closer to its end, though it still remains unclear when the new episodes will arrive on streaming.
The Watcher is executive produced by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, who also created the Monster series. Other EPs include Crystle Roberson Dorsey, Nissa Diederich, Karl Frankenfield, Scott Robertson, Todd Kubrak, Tanase Popa, Eric Newman, Max Winkler, Naomi Watts, Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman, and Bryan Unkeless.
The first season was divisive with critics, scored at 54% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was nevertheless a major streaming hit. It spent five weeks in the Global Top 10 list for English-language TV shows on Netflix. The series also hit the Top 10 in over 90 countries.
The Watcher is streaming on Netflix. Season 2 does not yet have a release date.
