Every Halloween, fans have returned to the haunting atmosphere of Stanley Kubrick’s immortal horror classic, The Shining.
As undeniably fantastic as the original film remains over 40 years later, the prestigious home media brand the Criterion Collection is set to introduce American audiences for a brand-new version of The Shining they’ve never seen before.
Arriving on October 20 via Criterion’s mammoth Kubrick collection box set, The Complete Kubrick includes the rare European cut of The Shining, which acts as a condensed version of the original film with about 25 minutes trimmed from the movie’s original 144 minute runtime.
Based on the beloved Stephen King novel of the same name, The Shining follows a failed writer (Jack Nicholson), his wife (Shelley Duvall) and their young son (Danny Lloyd) as they spend the winter in an isolated hotel in the mountains of Colorado.
As the snow builds up outside and their isolation continues to grow, the family soon begin to wonder whether the spirits of the hotel’s past inhabitants have ever truly left the property.
“For this domestic nightmare, Stanley Kubrick took a Stephen King best seller and infused it with his own demons and obsessions, creating a tour de force of dreamlike dread and disturbing ambiguity,” Criterion said of the classic 1980 horror film.
“Channeling historical trauma and contemporary anxieties about failed masculinity into images of surreal, subliminal power, Kubrick constructs a maelstrom of psychological terror that stands as one of the most endlessly analyzed horror films ever made,” the fan-favorite home media brand continued.
Arriving via Criterion’s website and in-person retailers like Barnes & Noble on October 20, this new version of The Shining can exclusively be found in The Complete Kubrick, along with update releases of similarly sensational Stanley Kubrick-directed movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove and Full Metal Jacket.
