Michael Stipe is finally getting closer to releasing his long-awaited debut solo album, and the former R.E.M. frontman has shared a timeline for when fans can expect to hear his new music.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times published October 13, Stipe revealed that his first solo single, accompanied by a music video, is scheduled to arrive on New Year’s Eve 2026. The full album is expected to follow in May 2027.
“Five seconds into the new year, there will be a new song with a video setting up the album,” Stipe told the publication.
The upcoming release marks a significant milestone for the singer, who has spent years working on his first full-length solo project following R.E.M.’s breakup in 2011.
Michael Stipe’s solo album is nearly finished
Stipe, 66, discussed the record alongside producer Andrew Watt, with whom he collaborated on “I Played the Fool,” the theme song for HBO’s comedy series Rooster, starring Steve Carell. The Los Angeles Times interview explores how the collaboration has helped bring the singer back into the music-making process.
Working with Watt gave Stipe the opportunity to explore new possibilities outside his decades-long musical partnership with R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck.
The singer is also working with musician Andy LeMaster, and the pair have been mixing songs for the upcoming album. Stipe described his collaborators as a “gallery of thieves,” suggesting that several musicians have contributed to the project.
Although the album remains untitled, Stipe previously offered fans a preview of its music. In April 2026, he performed “The Rest of Ever” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
Stipe says the album will reflect his instincts
Stipe also offered insight into the album’s themes, explaining that the music is not intended to address specific political events. However, he acknowledged that his background as an activist and his legacy with R.E.M. inevitably influence how listeners may interpret his work.
As he explained in the interview, he is responding to his instincts and focusing on what he needs from music and what he can offer through it.
R.E.M., known for songs including “Losing My Religion” and “Everybody Hurts,” remains one of the defining alternative-rock bands of its era. The group officially disbanded in 2011, leaving fans waiting for Stipe’s next major musical chapter.
