The 2020s have been an incredible decade for movies so far. After years of moviegoers complaining about Hollywood regurgitating the same stories over and over, cinemas are finally filled once again with titles that feel unique. There have been so many amazing entries over the last six years, from elevated horror offerings like Obsession and The Invisible Man to deeply personal and emotional films like Aftersun. Not to mention epic period pieces like Killers of the Flower Moon, The Brutalist, and The Odyssey.
All of this to say, the 2020s have rejuvenated the idea that there are still meaningful stories to tell on the silver screen. There are so many beautiful films to talk about released since the turn of the new decade, but this list will attempt to identify five movies from the 2020s that can be called absolutely perfect. Some movies on this list might seem obvious, but a few might just surprise even the most avid moviegoers.
Sinners Blends Horror With Deep Historical & Cultural Themes
Sinners is one of those rare horror movies that is such a masterpiece, it’s easy to forget that it’s horror altogether. Unfortunately, despite many incredible offerings from the genre, horror tends to get the short end of the stick from a critical perspective and rarely gets nominated for meaningful awards. Sinners defied those expectations by earning 16 Academy Award nominations, of which it won four, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan. It also received 18 nominations at the 57th NAACP Image Awards and won a jaw-dropping 13 of them.
On the surface, Sinners seems like a relatively simple vampire story, but what makes it stand out is how it incorporated themes of music, culture, and a deep dive into the history of violence against people of color, specifically Black communities of the American South. The film follows Elijah “Smoke” and Elias “Stack” Moore, two identical twins who fought in WWI and now seek to open a juke joint for the local population of Clarksdale, Mississippi.
Sinners blends all the terrifying bloodshed that comes with a good vampire story with the very real-world horrors of racism, especially where the Ku Klux Klan is concerned. This interesting parallel only serves to emphasize how terrifying the KKK actually is. Sinners also heavily features music, specifically blues, as a living entity or “spiritual technology” that transcends generations, connects people, and helps fight back against oppression. Sinners is one of the most unique vampire movies ever made and one of the best horror movies to come out of not just the 2020s, but the 21st century entirely.
Dune: Part Two Is a Huge Pay-Off of the First Film
Dune: Part One hit theaters in 2021, and while the movie was seen as incredible at the time, it’s also incredibly slow. The two-and-a-half-hour runtime was mostly dedicated to introducing its main characters and setting the scene for the rest of the Dune trilogy. Dune: Part Three will hit theaters in December 2026, and it is expected to be one of the biggest releases of the year, but it remains to be seen if it will top the masterpiece that is Dune: Part Two.
Dune: Part Two arrived in March 2024, delivering on everything that the original film set up. While it is the second movie in a trilogy, it doesn’t feel like a mere centerpiece that connects the beginning and end. Dune: Part Two picks up where Part One left off, with Paul Atreides joining forces with Chani and the Fremen to face the conspirators who destroyed his family. Paul finds himself not just in a vicious battle against violent oppressors, but also facing a difficult choice between the woman he loves and the future for all of his people.
There are so many reasons that Dune: Part Two is a modern masterpiece, but the immersion offered is definitely paramount among them. The world-building, incredible visuals, and impressive sound design make the audience feel like they’re inside the movie instead of just watching it. The film improves on the pacing of the first entry while paying off everything Part One set up. It also expertly subverts the Chosen One trope by dissecting Paul and showing him for what he is, a tragic, deeply flawed, and morally ambiguous leader.
Project Hail Mary Became an Instant Sci-Fi Classic
Project Hail Mary is the newest film on this list, as it came out in March 2026. Fans of Andy Weir’s novel of the same name had some nerves about this film adaptation when it was first announced, simply due to how beloved the source material was; however, it’s safe to say that Project Hail Mary blew all expectations out of the water. It rapidly became one of the best sci-fi movies of the decade and an instant crowd-pleasing fan-favorite.
The best part about this movie is how it approaches the dark idea of human extinction with a surprising burst of positivity and the importance of companionship. Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher/former molecular biologist sent on a suicide mission to investigate a solution to the potential collapse of the Earth’s Sun. The Sun is being smothered by a virus-like line of infrared light that seeps the star’s energy into a substance called “astrophage.” This causes rapid cooling of the Earth, giving the world just over three decades to figure out a solution.
Project Hail Mary sounds like a terrifying film, but in reality, it’s actually quite uplifting. Grace is an unlikely hero. He didn’t want to join the movie’s central mission and actively tried to run from it, but when he wakes up as the only living member of the crew, he gets to work, eventually befriending an alien lifeform named Rocky. With Rocky, he learns to communicate, sparking a great friendship, setting their planetary differences aside, and tackling the astrophage problem together. This movie defies all expectations by emphasizing the importance of teamwork, communication, bravery, self-sacrifice, and never giving up, even when circumstances seem impossible.
Oppenheimer Explores the Creation of the Atomic Bomb
Oppenheimer is the 2023 Christopher Nolan movie that hit theaters on the same day as another incredible 2020s film, Barbie. Thanks to the massive juxtaposition offered by both the aesthetics and stories of these two highly anticipated movies, the movie fan event, “Barbenheimer” became a viral sensation that helped boost both movies’ popularity. Even without that hype, Oppenheimer was destined to be one of the decade’s greatest films.
Some Nolan fans might argue that 2026’s The Odyssey deserves to be on this list more, but Oppenheimer is a brilliant masterpiece rooted in the real world, headlined by incredible performances, gripping emotional twists, and epic scale. It explores the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his involvement with the Manhattan Project, which was the birthplace of the Atomic Bomb, the world’s first real nuclear weapon. The film brilliantly recounts the creation of a weapon so powerful and how its creator reckons with his invention.
The real reason that Oppenheimer is such a masterpiece can be tackled from a few different angles. Nolan chose to approach the story from memories and political trials that make the events feel more scattered, but also more grounded in being told a real story recited from memory rather than in strict chronological order. It also refuses to paint the Manhattan Project and Oppenheimer himself in a good or bad light, instead focusing on the moral complexity and weight of creating a nuclear weapon. Oppenheimer asks one serious question about whether a single person or group of people has the right to wield such power, and it doesn’t offer any easy answers.
Everything Everywhere All at Once Is a Powerful Story About Family
Everything Everywhere All at Once is a 2022 absurdist comedy-drama film that is hard to explain in just a few words. The film follows Evelyn Quan Wang, a Chinese-American immigrant who struggles to make ends meet while running a family laundromat and facing an audit from the IRS. This immediately establishes the important backbone of the film, which puts emphasis on the struggles of an immigrant family dealing with everyday hardships mixed in with generational trauma and conflict.
What makes Everything Everywhere All at Once stand out, though, is the reality-bending, multiversal approach to storytelling that sees Evelyn discover the existence of multiple realities. Evelyn soon realizes that the IRS is the least of her problems, as she must join forces with alternate versions of herself to stop her own daughter, who has become a massive threat to the multiverse’s existence. At the heart of the movie, Everything Everywhere All at Once is about a struggling mother attempting to connect with her daughter.
Everything Everywhere All at Once is an information-overload sort of film that keeps moviegoers engaged with increasing levels of absurdity. The movie tackles a very difficult and real fear that everything in the universe is meaningless. Instead of giving in to this hopeless idea, the underlying theme insists that if everything is meaningless, each person must find their own purpose in everyday life and small, random acts of kindness that might seem insignificant but truly make a difference.
