Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise hinted at the future of Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton in the Season 1 finale of Dutton Ranch, including the character positioned to follow in her footsteps. Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind) shares several important similarities with John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) only daughter, making her the franchise’s clearest new stand-in for the role Beth once filled.
After Yellowstone, Beth and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) leave Montana for Rio Paloma, Texas, where Dutton Ranch Season 1 introduces an entirely new group of threats. Among them is Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), owner of the renowned 10-Petal Ranch. By the finale, the Jackson family’s criminal operation is exposed, with devastating consequences for everyone involved.
Dutton Ranch Season 1’s Finale Featured a Major Death
Dutton Ranch Season 1’s finale exposes the crimes Beulah Jackson and her sons, Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) and Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba), committed to keep the 10-Petal financially afloat. After mounting financial problems threatened the ranch years earlier, Beulah made a deal with Mariano Reyes (Raoul Max Trujillo), Joaquin’s father, to smuggle drugs inside cattle shipments for the cartel.
Beth and Rip bring Everette McKinney (Ed Harris) in to investigate and discover that their new employer is involved in a fentanyl smuggling operation, with the veterinarian confirming that drugs have been hidden inside the cows. After Rip confronts Rob-Will, Beth realizes there is no legitimate beef business at all, and the couple’s involvement only pulls them deeper into the Jackson family’s problems.
After Joaquin calls Mariano in to deal with Beulah’s decision to hand the 10-Petal Ranch to Rob-Will, as well as Beth and Rip’s knowledge of the smuggling operation, Mariano launches an assault on the Dutton Ranch. Rip, Zachariah (Marc Menchaca), and Azul (J.R. Villareal) hold their own, but Mariano’s cartel kidnaps Carter (Finn Little), who has run away from home, in retaliation.
Meanwhile, Dutton Ranch Season 1’s finale sees the Jackson family turn against itself. Joaquin and Rob-Will clash with Beulah, and Mariano orders Joaquin to kill his brother. The shooting happens offscreen, leaving the series deliberately unclear about who actually killed Rob-Will. Oreana later finds her father bleeding on the ground, creating another painful question for Season 2.
The finale also launches a full-scale war between the Dutton family and the cartel behind the 10-Petal operation, establishing a major challenge for Beth and Rip next season. Oreana and Carter are both caught in the middle, with the cartel kidnapping Beth and Rip’s son and derailing his plans to run away with Beulah’s granddaughter.
Oreana Is the Next Beth Dutton
Season 1’s finale establishes several character dynamics for Dutton Ranch Season 2, with Paramount+ renewing the series for another run in June. Most notably, the Yellowstone franchise is positioning Oreana Jackson as the next generation’s Beth Dutton, with major events in her life closely echoing Beth’s own experiences.
Dutton Ranch Season 1 establishes several similarities between Oreana Jackson and Beth Dutton. Both women are headstrong, and among the last people in line for enormous ranching legacies they have little interest in inheriting beyond their loyalty to their families. “El Padrino” then introduces specific developments for Oreana that make the comparison even stronger.
Oreana discovers that she’s pregnant in Dutton Ranch Episode 9, echoing Beth’s own unexpected pregnancy when she was young. It remains unclear what Oreana will decide to do, but Beth immediately senses that something is wrong when Oreana arrives at the 10-Petal Ranch looking for Carter, further emphasizing the connection between the two characters.
Oreana also discovers her father’s murder in “El Padrino,” during one of Dutton Ranch‘s most emotional scenes. Beth may understand Oreana better than almost anyone when the series returns, considering she was among the first people to confront what happened to John Dutton in Yellowstone, and similarly had to process the sudden murder of her father.
Carter, an orphaned teenager with a difficult past, also recalls a younger Rip in Yellowstone. His relationship with Oreana gives the series a possible next-generation reflection of Beth and Rip’s romance. With Oreana pregnant, “El Padrino” also raises the possibility of extending the Dutton family into another generation, although the episode never confirms that Carter is the father.
