Dr. Perry Cox is back at Sacred Heart — but not under circumstances he’d ever have imagined.
Wednesday’s Halloween-themed episode of “Scrubs” marked John C. McGinley’s first appearance since the revival’s two-episode Season 2 premiere, which saw Cox readmitted to the hospital after his insurance company refused to cover his costly treatments otherwise. And while his latest return brought back some of the cantankerous physician’s signature attitude, it also revealed the heartbreaking reality of his retirement.
Cox has taken a job as a concierge doctor to Rick Fabian (Kurt Fuller, “Evil”), the aloof CEO of a private aviation company. Rick is his one and only patient, and Cox makes clear to J.D. that he hasn’t returned to work because he misses practicing medicine. He’s back because he has no other choice. Despite having health insurance, he’s drowning in medical bills even once insurance is factored in, and the retirement he’d envisioned for himself is no longer financially possible.
“You thought I wanted to spend my retirement working?” he asks J.D. “I had so many plans for my golden years — but all those plans are gone and I did everything I was supposed to do and then I got sick. And here I am.”
Still, Cox gets at least some of his old mojo back when a Code Blue in the administrative wing forces everyone into action. After the patient, an organ donor, dies, Cox puts Rick in his place, demanding that he show some gratitude for receiving her kidney. For a moment, at least, the Dr. Cox we know and love is back. And this won’t be his final appearance of the season: McGinley is confirmed to return for the Wednesday, December 9 finale.
J.D.’s New Love Interest Is Already at Odds With Elliot
Following last week’s disastrous turn of events with Charlie, J.D. appears poised to rebound with Cassie, Sacred Heart’s new hospital administrator, played by “English Teacher” alum Stephanie Koenig.
What J.D. doesn’t know, however, is that Cassie has already put the kibosh on Elliot’s mobile clinic — a decision that threatens to create fresh tension between the exes. And they’ll have another matter to contend with next week, when viewers meet their son, Ollie, for the first time. (According to the official synopsis for Season 2, Episode 7, “J.D. and Elliot reconnect while managing a difficult parenting conversation.”)
Of course, “Scrubs” didn’t let Halloween pass without a little silliness. The episode treated viewers to a J.D.-as-Mary Poppins fantasy, complete with an animated Rowdy, while Turk dressed as Bobby Brown and showed off some of his signature dance moves for one of Carla’s pediatric patients. It wasn’t quite as glorious as Turk’s legendary “Poison” dance, but it was a delightful homage nonetheless.
What did you think of “Scrubs” Season 2, Episode 6: “My Halloween”?
