Kevin Costner Beat Taylor Sheridan at His Own Game With a 3-Part Western Miniseries You Can Binge in One Night

Taylor Sheridan remains a master when it comes to crafting intense, family-driven dramas. Beginning with Yellowstone in 2018, Sheridan has a proven track record of developing engrossing dramatic narratives that bring the bonds of blood into play, stirring conflict between members of the same family or between a family that’s circled the wagons and the world outside. The familial bonds add an extra layer of depth to every twist, betrayal, or sacrifice within the story, and they keep the stakes high at all times.

As gripping as Sheridan’s neo-Westerns are, another Western miniseries that predates even Yellowstone set the bar high for family drama. The History Channel released Hatfields & McCoys in 2012, based on the infamous real-world family rivalry that existed for nearly 30 years in West Virginia and Kentucky in the period during and directly after the American Civil War. Starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton as the patriarchs of the two warring families, the three-part epic miniseries covered the bloody feud in unflinching, violent detail.

‘Hatfields & McCoys’ Is a Gritty, Fast-Paced Revenge Narrative

Hatfields & McCoys is technically a docudrama, as it does attempt to pack a great deal of history into nearly 300 minutes of total runtime despite taking some creative liberties for the sake of entertainment. The show follows the long-standing feud between the Hatfields of West Virginia and the McCoys of Kentucky, who lived near each other along the Big Sandy River, a tributary of the Ohio River. Over the course of three parts, Hatfields & McCoys chronicles the misdeeds of family members and allies from both sides as their animosity grows, beginning with a murder during the Civil War.

The series covers the most violent skirmishes between the two families, the legal battles, and even a Romeo and Juliet-esque romance that develops between two members of the warring sides. The intensity builds over the course of the show, with the vitriol and hatred between the two sides deepening with each new injustice, until both sides are entirely consumed in the fires of vengeance. As the first scripted drama ever produced by The History Channel, Hatfields & McCoys walks a fine line between entertainment and education, with the former clearly winning the day when the series is looked at holistically. With just three parts and plenty of instances of violence, the show maintains its intensity from start to finish with very little drag.

‘Hatfields & McCoys’ Is Loaded With Major Stars

Just like Sheridan’s best shows, Hatfields & McCoys is carried by exceptional performances from some true A-listers. Kevin Costner stars as Wiliam Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield, while Billl Paxton features as his rival Randolph “Randall” McCoy. The two families, along with a list of close friends and allies for each side, are all brought to life with talented performances from even the lesser-known actors and actresses. There are of course a number of veterans lending their talents to key members, most notably Powers Boothe as Judge “Wall” Hatfield, Tom Berenger as Jim Vance (Hatfield), Jena Malone as Nancy McCoy, and Mare Winningham as Sally McCoy.

Hatfields & McCoys was ultimately nominated 16 times at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, and the cast played a major role in swelling that number. Costner and Paxton both received nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie, with Costner taking home the statue. Both Tom Berenger and Mare Winningham received Best Supporting Actor/Actress nominations, with Berenger also winning an Emmy for his gritty, gruff performance.

The Family Drama Is Even More Intense Than Sheridan’s Best Series

Hatfields & McCoys received a slew of other Emmy nominations related to the production, costume design, direction, editing, and sound. However, where it truly stands tall is in the genuine menace that the cast and crew managed to bring to life stemming from the one central feud. Steeped in sweat-stained Reconstruction Era garb amid the foothills of Carpathia (standing in for Appalachia), the various actors and actresses manage to make the rivalry feel emotionally authentic, with stakes and occurrences that truly depict the history-based rivalry as a watershed moment for generational hatred in America.

Although a majority of both the Hatfields and McCoys fought on the side of the Confederacy in the Civil War, the murder of Asa McCoy, who fought for the Union, at the hands of Jim Vance Hatfield is what ignites the flames of the rivalry. It all spirals outward from there, with the violence and bloodshed between the two families making for gripping television. Perhaps even more engaging are the moments where the respective sides call the loyalty of their own kin into question, especially when it comes to those who would seek peace as opposed to continuing the bitter feud. In those moments, Hatfields & McCoys surpasses even the most operatic family drama moments of Sheridan’s greatest series. The three-part Western makes for a tremendous one-night binge watch.

Hatfields & McCoys can currently be found on Netflix in some countries, or for purchase/rent on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, or Apple TV.
