Dark shonen has been dominating both anime and manga throughout the 2020s,and Gachiakuta made itself right at home. With the anime premiering during the Summer 2025 Anime Season, the series managed to amass an even greater collection of fans, and it shows no signs of slowing down.
Gachiakuta’s characters are easily the best part of the series. Each has their own unique and extraordinary abilities, but one staggering difference to characters in other battle shonen, which often rely on the spiritual acquisition of their abilities, Gachiakuta‘s world setting allows for the true value of an object to determine its worth and power. As these items become Vital Instruments, their users gain access to extraordinary abilities and powers, allowing the beloved characters to embrace power unlike any before.
Zanka’s Desire to Surpass His Peers Makes Him A Sharp Combatant
Originally, Zanka was a member of the prestigious Nijiku Family and trained to become a member of the Hell Guard. But even after being convinced that he would never be as capable as his peers, that wouldn’t stop him for long. Zanka joins the Cleaners and continues to show off his impressive powers.
With his Vital Instrument at his side, Zanka’s determination to rise up above society’s “geniuses” makes him focused on bringing down his enemies. Zanka’s Vital Instrument is the Lovely Assistaff, a stick that can become sharp enough for Zanka to split Trashbeasts in two. Zanka’s tactical mind allows him to find creative ways to use his simple weapon of choice.
He can plant his staff on the ground, sensing the vibrations of people or objects to determine their locations. He is also quick to deduce the abilities of other Vital Instruments he fights against, working with Rudo to create a plan to subdue Jabber Wonger. Against all odds, Zanka’s sharp mind and sharper blade can prevail in the most unlikely situations.

Hyo’s Eccentricities Mask Her Proficiency in Battle
Hyo is a serious, albeit peculiar, Hell Guard trainee. On the surface, Hyo is very stoic, using strange terms like “stimulate my hippocampus” to describe things she wants to do. However, what can’t be ignored are her exceptional combat skills. Hyo is a proficient hand-to-hand combatant, easily outclassing everyone else in her class.
As of now, not much is known about Hyo’s current capabilities. But Hyo’s abilities have been able to overpower Zanka in the past, another top-class student who would soon become a powerful cleaner. Hyo’s enigmatic nature makes it hard to get a read on her, and even harder to determine what her next move will be. Hyo’s enigmatic nature and unorthodox fighting style makes her a true wildcard, someone whose full potential could make her a highly dangerous foe.
Jabber Wonger’s Thirst For Battle Makes Him a Dangerous Opponent
Jabber Wonger is nothing less than a psychopath with an unrelenting passion for inflicting pain on his enemies. Gachiakuta presents the Raider as a masochist who loves the thrill of battle. When Jabber gets to confront someone as strong as Zanka, he blocks out everyone around him to focus on his next target. Thanks to his superhuman durability and Vital Instruments, Jabber can take on far stronger opponents and still survive.
Gachiakuta is known for its unique power system, and Jabber Wonger is living proof of its effeciency. Jabber’s Vital Instruments take the form of 10 rings, transforming into a set of poisonous claws he uses in battle. In its suppressed state, Jabber’s Mankira rings can also copy the poisons of plants and animals, mixing them with his own.
This already makes Jabber a dangerous opponent, and the released form of the rings only increases his power. The released form of Mankira causes Jabber’s claws to grow even larger and increases the range of his attacks. Jabber is a formidable opponent that always finds a way to survive even the deadliest of encounters.
Fu Oroster’s Vital Instrument Makes Him an Utter Wildcard
Fu Oroster doesn’t seem very intimidating at first. The timid Raider turned Cleaner is a timid character who relies on being given orders about what they should do at all times. However, this completely changes once he’s forced into a fight. Fu Oroster’s Vital Instrument, the cursed doll Hii, possesses his body during battle and makes him extremely ferocious.
The doll increases Fu’s strength significantly. Rather than taking the form of a weapon, Fu’s whole body becomes his Vital Instrument once Hii takes control of him. Fu has proven himself to be strong enough to pummel Jabber Wonger into the ground with little resistance. Fu might not be strong on the surface, but there’s far more to the former Raider than meets the eye.
Noerde Hew Amozo is A Deadly Combatant With Incredibly Powerful Skills
Noerde is one of the most prideful Vandals in Gatchiakuta’s dark shonen setting, and for good reason. From birth, she was raised as a warrior in an all-female tribe called the Sileia. After joining the Raiders, Noerde’s abilities are only heightened thanks to her Vital Instrument. By using a special comb, Noerde can electrocute anything and anyone with the static electricity generated by the deadly weapon.
The Vandal can’t use this ability constantly, though. Noerde has a limit of one to two minutes before she can charge her hair with the electricity she needs. Noerde makes up for this with her Last Burst, a technique that spreads her electric charge over a large area. Without any preparation, Noerde is a deadly opponent to face off against.
Riyo Reaper Can Be Far More Ruthless Than She Lets On
Riyo Reaper is one of the first major female characters fans will be introduced to, and leaves a powerful first impression. Out of the Cleaners in Team Akuta, she’s easily the most unpredictable. On the surface, Riyo is very carefree and makes a habit of playing around with Rudo’s hair whenever she’s bored. In the heat of battle, however, she’s proven herself to be extremely formidable.
Riyo gets very sadistic and excitable whenever she’s presented with a proper challenge. As a former hitman, Riyo has no issue with killing anyone who might be a threat to her team. The Cleaner was more than happy to kill Noerde during their fight, gunning her down with little remorse. Her Vital Instrument, the Ripper, also takes the form of a massive pair of scissors she can use to chop down Trash Beasts brutally. Even after Enji makes her swear to never kill her enemies, that doesn’t make Riyo any less deadly.
Enjin’s Abilities and Experience Make Him a Reliable Leader for Team Akuta
Enjin is the leader of Team Akuta and is an extremely capable Cleaner. Despite claiming to be an average person, Enjin’s experience makes him far more capable at tackling dangerous enemies than any normal Cleaner. His charisma and social skills were enough to counsel Riyo and Zanka about their troubles, making him a pillar of support among his group of misfits. Combined with his combat prowess, Enjin can wipe out several Trash Beasts all at once.
The Cleaner’s Vital Instrument is an Umbrella called Umbreaker. Umbreaker can be used by Enjin to float in the air, drill into obstacles or be used to shield the Cleaner from incoming attacks. He can also launch Umbreaker at enemies using a wire, increasing his range. Enjin’s Vital Instrument may be simple, but the creative ways he uses it to the fullest make him someone that Raiders shouldn’t make light of.
Tamsy is another character in Gachiakuta that’s still shrouded in mystery. On the surface, he’s a very benevolent Cleaner who provides positive encouragement for Rudo as he adjusts to life on the Ground. However, it’s quickly revealed that there’s more to Tamsy than meets the eye. Not only does he have extensive knowledge of the special Watchman Series set of Vital Instruments, but he also possesses wild abilities.
Tamsy is officially recognized as the Angel, one of the only beings capable of moving between the Ground and the Sphere. His Vital Instrument, the Tokushin, creates a net that can ensnare several people at once. Tamsy can even create clones from Tokushin’s threads so he can attack his enemies, making him very adaptable.
After obtaining the Watchman Book, Tamsy gains the ability to alter people’s memories, changing their perception of events on a whim. It’s still unclear what the full extent of Tamsy’s power is, but what is certain is that Tamsy is a truly dangerous opponent.
Rudo Surebrec’s Unique Powers Make Him Exceptionally Strong
Gachiakuta‘s main protagonist, Rudo Surebrec, is already one of the most powerful characters in the series. Despite his closed-off nature, Rudo grows to become very protective of his allies in Team Akuta, increasing his conviction to protect them. Rudo’s powers all come from his Vital Instrument, the 3R.
This pair of special gloves gives Rudo the ability to turn anything he touches into another Vital Instrument that he can manipulate. Rudo’s uncanny skill with 3R enables him to use it in a variety of ways. Depending on the discarded object, Rudo has been shown to manipulate objects like chains, spiked tires, and broken fences to attack enemies or defend his allies.
This power still has limitations, however. Once Rudo is done using an object that’s turned into a Vital Instrument, it crumbles into dust. Despite this drawback, Rudo’s abilities mean that he can adapt to any situation as long as he has the proper materials to help him fight enemies.
Zodyl Typhon Is In A League Of His Own
Gachiakuta‘s primary antagonist, Zodyl Typhon, is also the manga’s strongest character yet. The leader of the Raiders is an incredibly powerful opponent thanks to cunning tactics and powerful abilities. Just like Rudo, Zodyl’s Vital Instrument gives him different powers depending on the circumstances. Depending on what he eats, Zodyl’s Mishra Coat can take on a wide range of abilities.
Mishra’s usage can easily turn the tide of the battle in Zodyl’s favor. Previous chapters have seen Zodyl use the coat to generate dozens of appendages to attack Rudo and Enjin. He can also sprout black wings that enable him to fly long distances, making it hard to truly pin Zodyl down before he overwhelms his target. Among Gachiakuta‘s cast of characters, there hasn’t been anyone who’s come close to Zodyl’s level yet.
