Most shonen protagonists grow stronger and kinder in equal proportions. Their beliefs are further confirmed rather than continuously tested by the world around them. Gon Freecss starts his journey looking exactly like that kind of typical hero: cheerful, optimistic, and having a childlike moral compass. Hunter x Hunter patiently distorts that image through the consequences of Gon’s own choices and beliefs.
The same fearlessness that makes Gon extraordinary makes him capable of destruction as well. Similarly, the loyalty that defines him almost drives him closer to decisions that nearly kill everyone around him. By the time the Chimera Ant arc reaches its conclusion, the boy who began the series chasing a dream has made a suicidal vow, pushed away every person who loved him, and traded everything for revenge.
Hanzo Broke Gon’s Arm And Taught Him That Stubbornness And Strength Are Not The Same Thing
The final phase of the Hunter Exam paired Gon against Hanzo, an expert shinobi with years of combat training. The rules required an opponent to verbally surrender to lose, meaning knockouts didn’t really count. For hours, Hanzo beat Gon methodically, breaking his arm and inflicting considerable damage. Gon stubbornly refused to lose, believing that if he just held out, he could find a way to win.
Instead, Hunter x Hunter completely challenged Gon’s naive belief in merit and fair competition. Frustrated by Gon, Hanzo simply gave up and technically handed Gon a victory. This outcome deeply upset Gon.
He woke up demanding a rematch, furiously rejecting the idea of winning a license he didn’t earn. This moment forced Gon to face an unjust reality, that in the brutal world of Hunters, circumstance can override strength, leaving him with a meaningless win that violated his sense of fairness.
Gon Threatening An Innocent Girl Revealed That His Morality Was Always Built On Conditions
Initially, Gon processed violence the way a child raised in nature normally would. However, his actual mindset got exposed when he walked into the Chimera Ant palace and found Neferpitou, the creature that desecrated Kite, begging for time to finish healing a blind human girl named Komugi. Gon became furious, screaming at Pitou for showing mercy to Komugi after what was done to Kite, and then threatened to kill the helpless girl.
Gon used a human being as a weapon to blackmail an enemy who was actively trying to save one. He reacted like this because Pitou never lacked humanity, and that meant the cruelty toward Kite was a choice. Gon could not forgive that and, in his inability to forgive it, he became something worse than what he came to fight.
Gon Used Killua’s Darkest Wound Against Him And Destroyed Their Partnership
From the moment the two met, Gon believed that he and Killua were an inseparable team, sharing a bond built on unconditional trust and equality. He accepted Killua’s dark assassin past without hesitation, and viewed their friendship as a safe haven where they could face the world as equals. However, when Killua tried to pull Gon back from his grief over Kite, that foundational belief broke apart.
Blinded by rage, Gon turned on his best friend, uttering the most damaging words possible: “It’s easy for you, Killua. You’re calm. Since it doesn’t concern you.” In a single moment, Gon challenged everything he claimed to believe about their bond.
By implying that Killua didn’t care about Kite and didn’t share his pain, Gon isolated himself and reduced Killua to an outsider. The second Killua’s rationality became an obstacle to Gon’s rage, Gon abandoned the belief that they were partners, proving that his idealized vision of friendship was entirely conditional.
Hisoka Spared Gon’s Life As A Collector Preserves A Trophy He Has Not Finished Admiring Yet
During the Hunter Exam, Gon successfully steals Hisoka’s badge through days of careful stalking, only to be immediately paralyzed by another contestant. Hisoka kills the attacker, retrieves the badges, and hands them back to Gon, who can’t move.
When Gon refuses them on the grounds that he didn’t earn them fairly, Hisoka punches him and reminds him that he is alive because Hisoka finds his potential entertaining, and that debt stays open until Gon becomes worth killing. This interaction poisons something fundamental in Gon’s mind.
He spends the Heaven’s Arena arc training obsessively just to secure one punch on Hisoka and return the badge on his own terms. He achieves his goal, but his belief in a just world never recovers.
Kurapika’s Descent Into Vengeance Taught Gon A Grave Lesson
Kurapika entered Gon’s life as proof that strength and moral clarity could coexist. Unfortunately, the Yorknew City showed something else. To destroy the Phantom Troupe, Kurapika built a Nen contract that would kill him instantly if he ever used Chain Jail against anyone outside the Troupe, binding his own heartbeat to a suicide clause powered entirely by hatred.
This transformation tested Gon’s belief that justice remained clean if the cause behind it was righteous. Tragically, Gon failed to learn the lessons he aimed to teach Kurapika. Instead, he internalizes this self-destructive path, setting the exact stage for him to make an even worse choice when his own grief over Kite became too heavy to carry.
Meeting Ging Destroyed The Belief System That Made Gon’s Entire Journey Feel Worth It
The main plot of Hunter x Hunter rests on a mythology Gon thought of all alone. Ging abandoned him, and rather than feeling resentment, Gon coped with a philosophy around the absence. He believed that a man who would choose adventure over his own son must be extraordinary, and finding him must be the most worthwhile thing in the world.
This carried Gon through every trial the series put in front of him. He survived the Hunter Exam, the Zoldyck estate, Greed Island, and the Chimera Ant arc, but he didn’t truly survive the eventual meeting. Ging turned out to be socially awkward, emotionally stunted, and hated by just about everyone.
When Gon broke down crying and apologized for his failures around Kite, Ging told him to stop because it was embarrassing in public. What shattered Gon was that standing in front of Ging, he saw his own worst qualities stare back at him. He saw the same pathological self-obsession, and the same capacity to discard people while chasing something only he could see.
Watching The Phantom Troupe Grieve Together Rewired Gon’s Understanding Of What Evil Looked Like
The Phantom Troupe massacred innocent people and stole the eyes of an entire clan. They were monsters, and monsters did not deserve anything good, according to Gon. That impression changed when Gon and Killua were captured and held inside the Troupe’s hideout.
Nobunaga wept openly for Uvogin, and the grief felt too real. The Troupe moved as a fiercely loyal unit, willing to die for each other without hesitation. Gon broke down and screamed at Nobunaga, demanding to know how they could cry for their friends while feeling nothing for the people they killed. The loyalty and love Gon cherished most in his own relationships existed inside a pack of mass murderers as well.
Gon Had to Sacrifice His Hand To Defeat Genthru
Gon entered the fight against Genthru thinking that dedicated training, refined technique, and sheer willpower would translate into clean victories. Biscuit’s mentorship pushed his physical limit more than it had ever been, and Gon believed that was enough. However, Genthru’s ability, Little Flower, detonated anything his hands touched, so things didn’t go exactly according to plan for Gon.
To land the decisive blow, Gon lets Genthru destroy his hand. The belief that outworking an opponent guaranteed a safe victory didn’t survive that fight. Now, Gon understood that winning at times requires tearing pieces of oneself away, a lesson he would apply on a catastrophic scale against Neferpitou.
Gon Burned Every Belief He Ever Held The Moment He Couldn’t Accept Kite Was Gone
Gon thought that his capacity for growth, fueled by pure intent and effort, would carry him through anything the world placed in front of him. When Neferpitou confirmed that Kite was already dead and beyond saving, that belief had nowhere left to go. Gon made a Nen vow in exchange for enough power to destroy Pitou, regardless of the consequences.
The transformation is the show’s most devastating indictment of everything Gon represented. He ignored Killua, beat an already defeated and dying Pitou into an unrecognizable state, and collapsed. Gon previously fought creatures that discarded human life, but the Nen vow made him one of the worst monters in the anime.
Teaming Up With Hisoka To Win Forced Gon To Admit That Good And Evil Don’t Always Stay In Separate Lanes
Greed Island presented Gon with a challenge that strength alone couldn’t solve. The dodgeball match against Razor required a level of power Gon’s team would never have been able to produce without Hisoka, a man who kills for entertainment and had already made clear he viewed Gon as a future trophy.
Gon chose to invite the monster into his circle anyway. Prior to this, he fiercely rejected anything tainted by malice. By willingly utilizing a serial killer to achieve his own personal goals, Gon proved that his ambitions were always capable of being achieved via a questionable compromise.
