10 years ago, director Makoto Shinkai took the anime world by storm with Your Name — a film about two teenagers who swap bodies due to a mysterious phenomenon. Now, this highly influential sci-fi classic is finally returning to theaters in North America.
Initially released on July 3, 2016, Your Name is rapidly approaching its 10th anniversary. Last month, GKIDS kicked off the film’s official celebration with the unveiling of Your Name‘s first-ever 4K home video release.
However, before this version arrives in stores on Aug. 25, 2026, Shinkai fans will also be able to revisit his iconic masterpiece at participating AMC theaters in North America. Per a press release from GKIDS, Your Name will be screened as a 4K remaster at select venues starting Aug. 14, 2026.
Your Name Gets New AMC Theater Screening in North America Next Month
Your Name is one of several original works that have earned Shinkai global acclaim as one of Japan’s most prominent anime directors. AMC’s site describes the film’s premise: “One morning, rural schoolgirl Mitsuha and city kid Taki awaken to discover that they’ve switched bodies. The total strangers struggle to navigate each other’s lives, walking tightropes of intimacy and distance. But when they finally resolve to meet, the true nature of their connection threatens to seal their fate.”
A narrative that fuses romance, tragedy and themes about maintaining personal connections across generations, Your Name is widely regarded as one of Shinkai’s most powerful works to date. Having grossed over $405.3 million worldwide, the film currently ranks as Japan’s third highest-grossing domestic production of all time, after only Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle.
The aforementioned 4K Blu-ray Steelbook Edition of Your Name is a great option for those who’d rather enjoy the film from the comfort of their homes. This version comes with extra bonus materials such as clean opening and closing credit sequences, an official interview with Shinkai and Japanese teaser trailers.
The Steelbook cover is also adorned with gorgeous artwork of the two lead characters set against a colorful evening sky. The interior of the case features an illustration of Comet Tiamat, the celestial body that threatens Mitsuha’s hometown and sets the film’s plot in motion.
Shinkai’s first feature-length anime original was The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004). His next film, 5 Centimeters Per Second — a romantic drama about two childhood friends who gradually drift apart when life pulls them in separate directions — debuted in Japan in 2007.
Despite earning far less than Shinkai’s later works, the anime was a modest commercial and critical success. In October 2025, director Yoshiyuki Okayama released a live-action movie adaptation of 5 Centimeters Per Second starring Mitsuki Takahata (Akari Shinohara) and Hokuto Matsumura (Takaki Tohno).
Shinkai’s most recent anime feature, Suzume, premiered in Japan on Nov. 11, 2022. In late 2025, the director confirmed that he is currently working on a brand-new anime with “dependable companions,” but a formal announcement has yet to be made.
For Shinkai fans who can’t make it to theaters on Aug. 14, Your Name is also currently available to stream on HBO Max.
