‘Jurassic World’ Director Colin Trevorrow Leads Tributes to Sam Neill

Tributes have poured in globally for Sam Neill, the legendary actor widely celebrated for his iconic role as world-renowned paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchises, following his death at the age of 78. The news of Neill’s passing was announced on Monday morning (Jul. 13), with a statement on Instagram noting that his death was “sudden and unexpected,” but that Neill died in Sydney, Australia, “surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.”

Neill had been diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer in 2022, but after undergoing treatment, he was finally given the all-clear in April this year. His family said they were “blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free” at the time of his death. The statement led to an outpouring of grief, as prominent industry figures shared their heartfelt condolences and tributes to the actor, who starred in over 100 films across his prolific five-decade career, with a robust filmography spanning blockbusters, indie dramas, and cult horror features. Colin Trevorrow, who worked with Neill on Jurassic World Dominion after bringing back the original legacy cast, was among the first to pay homage, calling the late star “a deeply soulful and beautiful man.”

“He was a friend and collaborator at a challenging time, and his strength gave us all strength,” the director continued in his remembrance of the actor, who reprised his beloved role as Dr. Alan Grant in the 2022 Jurassic World sequel alongside his former castmates Jeff Goldblum (Dr. Ian Malcolm) and Laura Dern (Dr. Ellie Sattler). “I’ll remember him for his tranquility, his love of wine, and for the calm assuredness he brought to his characters. It’s not every lifetime you get to befriend a legend. Forever grateful.”

The Boys star Karl Urban, who famously worked alongside Neill on the 2017 MCU tentpole Thor: Ragnarok, left a note in the comment section of the original post, praising the late actor as both a personal inspiration and a monumental figure in the industry. “Heartfelt condolences to your whanau,” he wrote. “Sam was truly brilliant. An inspiration for many who followed in his trailblazing footsteps. A beautiful man. A national treasure who gave so much to New Zealand and to the world. God speed Sam.”
