Rose Byrne, after giving one of the defining performances of her career in “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” is reuniting with her director Mary Bronstein for a new film called “Nasty.”
The film will star Byrne alongside Jenna Ortega, and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Clockwork banner is releasing the film. The studio announced the project on Thursday, July 16, along with a poster teaser image for the film.
“Nasty” is based on a script by Isabella Jarosz that landed on the 2024 Black List. It follows a young woman battling for a spot on the Olympic gymnastics team who must overcome her biggest opponent: her coach.
Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap banner is producing the film, as is Ortega, and production on “Nasty” intends to begin this fall.
Byrne was Oscar-nominated for Best Actress for “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” in which she played a frazzled mother and therapist barely keeping her own head above water. The film was Bronstein’s second feature. Byrne is next starring in the Peacock series “The Good Daughter,” and Bronstein is also developing a series called “The Nanny Squatter” for Apple TV.
“Wednesday” star Ortega will next be seen in Taika Waititi’s “Klara and the Sun” and JJ Abrams’ next film, also for Warner Bros., “The Great Beyond.” That movie was meant to release this year but was just pushed to Fall 2027.
Clockwork is the upstart indie label at Warner Bros. led by a trio of former Neon executives. Sean Baker’s next film “Ti Amo!” is the first new film announced under the label, and it also acquired the Park Chan-wook’s next film “Brigands of Rattlecreek” starring Matthew McConaughey, Pedro Pascal, and Austin Butler. It will this fall re-release Ken Russell’s controversial classic “The Devils,” and the banner earlier this week spearheaded a first look deal at WB with Chris Ferguson and his studio Oddfellows, which has been behind “Backrooms,” “Longlegs,” and “The Monkey.”
