Four months since first announcing its development, Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk finally have some news regarding the Firefly revival. Unfortunately for many Browncoats out there, that news mostly involves asking for patience.
Fillion and Tudyk touched on the revival during a panel at MCM Comic-Con. The Firefly stars told fans that they’re working on it, but that these things do take time.
Firefly’s Revival Is a Slow Process
During the panle, Fillion reminded fans that “you saw a video, not announcing a series, but announcing the development of the series.” He then went on to explain, “Boy, it takes a lot longer than one would hope. The development, to get a show onto a television network or streaming platform, it’s not easy work, Alan, or else everyone would do it, right?”
Tudyk then chimed in to say, “I agree. I know. Especially since, previously, I mentioned the business is in a bit of a… going through some things. So, it’s in process much like developing photos when we were young. You go to a little box, guy who lives in a little house in a parking lot, that’s how they would do it in the States, the Kodak — you’d drop them off to some guy who was certainly stoned, and you’d pick them up a little while later after he’s done rifling through all of your personal images. So, we’re in the rifling-through-the-personal-images part. We’re not ready to pick them up, but when we do, you will hear.”
The Firefly Revival Has Been a Long Time Coming
Firefly fans have been waiting for the show to return pretty much ever since it was canceled 25 years ago. A follow-up movie, Serenity, did open in theaters in 2005, but failed to earn the box-office receipts necessary to give it a second life as a film franchise. Now it will finally return — assuming a streamer or network can be found — in animated form.
“The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant. Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve,” Fillion said in a statement announcing the animated revival.
The new Firefly animated series will take place between the end of the original television show and the events of Serenity. The original Firefly was set in the year 2517, after humanity had moved away from Earth and into a new star system. The show followed the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a “Firefly-class” spaceship. That crew was made up of nine very different individuals, played by Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Ron Glass. Joss Whedon created the series, and Tim Minear served as showrunner.
The original Firefly is streaming now on Hulu. Serenity is currently streaming on Prime Video. Firefly is also set for a brand-new ongoing comic book series published by Dynamite Entertainment, launching in September.
