One of the most exciting finds in the history of the Pokémon Trading Card Game has just been made in the home of one very lucky grandmother.
In a recent post to the r/PokémonTCG subReddit, user InkedSketch unveiled a massive discovery they made in the home of their grandmother, who they say had been asking for help looking for her old collectibles. What they discovered was a box full of sealed Pokémon toys and merchandise, as well as what might be more than $250,000 worth of vintage trading cards.
The Latest Major Pokémon TCG Find Is Every Collector’s Dream
Among the most notable finds were several Base Set Charizard cards, a binder full of the grandmother’s personal collection, and a variety of ancillary products. The biggest of the bunch by far, however, were dozens of sealed booster packs from the Pokémon TCG Base Set, plus expansions ranging from Jungle to Team Rocket to entire sealed boxes of Fossil.
As explained by InkedSketch in the original post, the search began with some interesting if not particularly valuable discoveries in their grandmother’s home before the true treasure trove was uncovered. “We thought that was it but even then she kept saying she thought she swore she bought packs,” InkedSketch writes.
“We continued the search in the house and didn’t find anything until we just checked under a TV cabinet(not as simple to see as it sounds) where my brother saw a couple boxes and pulled em out which is where the packs and Charizards came from,” the original post continues. “This also has fun gems like eBay receipts of when she bought them and what she paid for them. The binder has cards but not too many foil, its quite big though would be way too many pictures. Also had some Digimon and Topps Pokémon at the end.”
While Pokémon trading cards of nearly every variety have been highly sought-after collectibles for as long as they have existed, those from the Pokémon TCG have risen in price to an astronomical degree in the past decade. Although there are a wide variety of reason attributed to this extreme rise, the end result has not gone unnoticed by players and collectors, let alone by The Pokémon Company itself.
During Nintendo’s 86th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in June, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa responded to the issue of scalping in the Pokémon TCG space, promising that “Pokémon Company is taking various measures, including made-to-order sales and agreements with marketplace operators.”

Furukawa explained, “I understand that The Pokémon Company also plans to use an account verification method that utilizes My Number Cards [Japan’s official government-issued ID cards]. Nintendo also communicates with The Pokémon Company as needed to discuss appropriate ways to deliver products to consumers. We believe that The Pokémon Company will continue to take measures to respond to this issue.”
Although scalping is certainly one of the biggest driving factors when it comes to the price of Pokémon TCG cards, there is also the inherent rarity and collectibility of the cards themselves to consider. In fact, there are dozens of Pokémon TCG cards ranging from Team Rocket’s MewTwo to the monochrome Victini that are all worth hundreds of dollars and, more importantly, which players and collectors can pull from packs that are still in print and readily available today.
