Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con was all about the upcoming Marvel movies, but one movie left off the list for updates was the upcoming X-Men movie. Instead, the news is coming in the aftermath, with Ready or Not actress Samara Weaving reportedly attached to play an iconic supervillain-turned-hero in comic book lore.
Deadline shared the news that the iconic horror icon will take on the role of Emma Frost. However, the publication did point out that this comes from sources close to the movie and not from an official release. Marvel and Weaving’s reps have yet to comment on the casting.
The publication goes on to say that director Jake Schreier and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige both agreed that Weaving was the best for the role after rounds of auditions. It turns out that while a good number of actors were tested for this side-switching role, Weaving was the one that everyone struggled to beat, and she was quickly offered the chance to bring the comic book character to life.

Emma Frost starts off as a villain, but she eventually switches to the side of good in the comic series. She has two distinct abilities as a mutant, and one of them rivals Charles Xavier and Jean Grey, as she has high-level psionic abilities. She doesn’t just read minds. Instead, she creates illusions and memories; she’s able to induce mental paralysis; and she can create and fire psionic force bolts.
Her second mutation helps her mind become completely immune to others’ psychic intrusion. She is able to transform her entire body into an organic diamond, where she is nearly invulnerable and has superhuman strength. However, there is a trade-off with this second form, and that is that she can’t use her psychic powers.
Fans have had the chance to see Emma on screens in X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: First Class, where January Jones took on the role.
Weaving’s casting in the new X-Men movie is the first announcement. There have been searches for Cyclops, Wolverine, and Magneto. The casting of Cyclops will make sense, since eventually Emma and Cyclops have a romantic relationship following the death of Jean Grey. Obsession star Inde Navarette has shared that she would like to play Mystique, and that she’s been in meetings with Schreier, but nothing has come of that just yet.
There has been little focus on the new X-Men release. Hall H was all about Avengers: Doomsday, which will see a number of the cast members from the 2000s X-Men movies reprise their roles, and Ghost Rider.
