Pleasantville’s New 4K Release Cuts Key Line of Dialogue as Fans Cry Foul

After almost three decades, the Oscar-nominated dramedy Pleasantville returned with Shout Select’s all-new 4K “Collector’s Edition” release. While it may look different compared to how it originally appeared on the big screen in 1998, the release has also generated some backlash after fans realized it removes one of the movie’s most memorable lines.

In the original theatrical cut, along with previous releases on physical media, there’s a moment right at the end where twin siblings Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon) and David (Tobey Maguire) address their experience in the titular town. Jennifer shares that she’s no longer promiscuous by stating the line, “I did the slut thing, David. Got kind of old.” The line is completely removed from the new 4K release without explanation.

Fans Say They Won’t Buy the “Censored” 4K Release

As a result of the line’s removal, YouTubers, Redditors, and others on social media have criticized the release, arguing that it’s unnecessary censorship nobody asked for. While an official explanation hasn’t been given for the change, it’s believed that it was done to discreetly censor the film. It could be that someone involved saw it as inappropriate for a female character to describe herself that way. Those unhappy with the change say that the line was actually important to the story, as it demonstrated Jennifer’s character growth.

The movie, written and directed by Gary Ross, imagines vastly different twin siblings from the present being transported into the perfect black-and-white world of a TV sitcom from the 1950s. The siblings’ presence has a big effect on the world, gradually turning it from black and white into vibrant color. Initially, Jennifer is focused on boys, sex, and popularity, but becomes much more mature by the end after developing a genuine emotional connection with someone in Pleasantville — hence, her now-removed line at the end.

Director Gary Ross Approved the New Scan

Notably, the description for the Shout Select release of Pleasantville notes how Ross personally approved the new 4K scan. The filmmaker is also featured in new bonus footage speaking about the making of the movie. While he doesn’t specifically address removing the line, it’s widely believed that it was his call to have it omitted if the new scan was developed under his watch. Theoretically, it’s also possible that the cut was made in error through the transfer process.

In any case, the situation has not been publicly addressed by Ross or the publisher at this time. For now, fans of the movie are continuing to express their disappointment with the situation. As one person on X said upon seeing it pointed out, “Thanks for this, will not be buying a censored film.” Many others have stated that censoring Pleasantville is highly ironic, given the plot of the movie.
