30 years ago, the Transformers franchise was forever changed thanks to a truly bestial entry that ultimately saved the brand. Now, an homage to this era is being re-released eight years later, making for a truly optimal situation.
Hasbro is reissuing a version of the Transformers Generations Power of the Primes Optimal Optimus figure, which is based on the Maximal descendant of Optimus Prime himself. The figure even comes with a special display, cementing its status as a king among Primes. Now available to pre-order through various sources, it’s set to maximize fans’ collections one more time in about a month.
The Ultimate Beast Wars Homage Gets a Transformers Generations Reissue
This particular iteration of the Transformers Generations Power of the Primes Optimal Optimus is a redeco that was formerly exclusive to the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con event. The toy line concept gave various characters from the franchise the eponymous power of the Primes, with many of these action figures being versions of Autobot leader Optimus Prime.
The lineup also includes his Maximal descendant, Optimus Primal, with this toy homaging his multiple bodies from Beast Wars: Transformers. The 5.5″ Optimus Primal toy (based on his robot mode in the first season of Beast Wars) combines with Evolution Armor to become the 9″ Optimus Primal, based on his body in the show’s third season. At the same time, the color scheme of this deco has been changed to be black and grey, with this being derived from the Season 1 body instead of the brown and orange of Optimal Optimus.
Optimal Optimus transforms into both a Cybertronian jet and a robotic gorilla, the latter of which can ride a hoverboard (homaging Transmetal Optimus Primal from the cartoon’s second season). Optimal Optimus’ chest opens to house the Matrix of Leadership, and it also includes four Prime Master toys.
These are Nexus Prime, Amalgamous Prime, Primal Prime and the 13th Prime, all of whom currently have new toys in the Transformers: Age of the Primes series. Other accessories include the Scepter of Sparks that can hold the Prime Masters together, as well as the special edition throne packaging of the Comic-Con release.
This throne adds the Halo of Primus, which can hold up to 12 Prime Masters. Transformers Generations Power of the Primes Optimal Optimus can now be ordered from sites such as BigBadToyStore for US$100, with the toy expected to ship out in September 2026. This is both eight years after the original release and 30 years after the release of Beast Wars: Transformers.
