The Pitt Season 3 Officially Confirms Bigger Role For Key Character

The Pitt season 3 will be expanding a key character’s role.

The Pitt might have Noah Wyle’s Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch firmly at its center, but the medical drama has proven itself a strong ensemble series throughout its first two seasons. Major characters come and go, which makes sense, given that the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center is a teaching hospital. That said, fans have been asking for certain characters to have their roles increased as the seasons go by, including the creation of a possible The Pitt spinoff focused on the night shift. Now, one of the most popular characters from The Pitt‘s cast is getting an expanded role in season 3.

During an interview with The Playlist‘s Bingeworthy podcast, Shawn Hatosy revealed how fans should expect a bigger role for Dr. Jack Abbot when The Pitt season 3 rolls around. According to the actor, who did not want to reveal too many details about what is coming in The Pitt season 3 or the story that awaits Abbot, his character will have a bigger role as “we’re getting to experience a little bit more” of The Pitt‘s night shift.

Hatosy also noted how exciting it is that The Pitt is expanding on its night shift characters at the end of each season and the start of the next. Check out the actor’s full quote below:

“We’re getting to experience a little bit more of that shift, if that makes sense. If that means the end of each season we get a little bit more, and the beginning of each season we get a little bit more, that’s kind of cool.”

While The Pitt season 3 will give fans more time with Abbot, Hatosy did bring some bad news for those wanting to see the popular character take off in a possible night shift spinoff. According to The Pitt star, he has “heard kind of explicitly from HBO Max and even Noah in the press that that’s not something that they want to do.” Hatosy did note that he would be interested in appearing in a The Pitt spinoff as Abbot, even suggesting a buddy comedy episode set inside an ambulance with Howard. However, he says, “it doesn’t sound like it’s a real possibility.”

The Pitt mainly focuses on the day shift at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, with key characters like Wyle’s Robby, Patrick Ball’s Dr. Frank Langdon, Katherine LaNasa’s Dana Evans, Taylor Dearden’s Dr. Mel King, and more. That said, both seasons of The Pitt have had time to flesh out the hospital’s night shift crew, with Hatosy’s Dr. Jack Abbot being the main player of a team that includes characters like Ayesha Harris’ Dr. Parker Ellis, Jalen Thomas Brooks’ Mateo Diaz, Ken Kirby’s Dr. John Shen, Luke Tennie’s Dr. Cruz, and more.

For his work on the medical drama in The Pitt season 1, Hatosy won the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series award at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. The actor has once again been nominated for the series, earning an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series nom for Abbot’s emotional storyline in The Pitt season 2. Whether he wins or not will be revealed at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14.

In season 2, Abbott was revealed to be working with SWAT to deal with his PTSD, and he also was crucial in getting it through to Robby that he needed help. For now, the details of Hatosy’s role in The Pitt season 3 remain under wraps, though fans of the HBO Max medical drama can expect a bigger presence from Abbott in the upcoming episodes.
