For anyone on Netflix who has already binged all seven seasons of The Closer on Netflix, there’s now six more seasons worth of content to check out next. The show’s official spinoff series, Major Crimes, has joined its parent series on the streaming platform.
As of Sept. 3, all six seasons of Major Crimes have been made available for streaming on Netflix. It follows the addition of The Closer, which already has all seven seasons available for subscribers. The original series aired on TNT from 2005 to 2012, coming to an end due to lead star Kyra Sedgwick choosing to move on to other projects. TNT was right in presuming that there was still a lot to explore with the remaining characters, as Major Crimes turned out to be a hit on its own upon arrival in 2012, spanning six seasons before ending in 2018.
Major Crimes Continued the Story After Kyra Sedwick’s Exit
Created by James Duff, Major Crimes picks up after the series finale of The Closer. With Sedgwick’s Brenda Leigh Johnson out, Mary McDonnell/s Captain Sharon Raydor takes over as the head of the Major Crimes Division. She was joined by several other original stars of The Closer reprising their roles, including G.W. Bailey (Lt. Louie Provenza), Tony Denison (Lt. Andy Flynn), Michael Paul Chan (Lt. Mike Tao), Raymond Cruz (Detective Julio Sanchez), Phillip P. Keene (Buzz Watson), Robert Gossett (Russell Taylor), and Jon Tenney (Fritz Howard).
The Major Crimes team was still hoping to keep the story going beyond Season 6. When it was announced that TNT would not be moving forward with Season 7, the choice was made to close out the story of Major Crimes in a big way. For the sake of avoiding spoilers for those who may now watch the series for the first time upon its move to Netflix, we won’t get into any more specifics here. Duff said at the time that the cast and crew were grieving the end of the series, and giving viewers a big shock felt like an appropriate way to wrap up the story.
Some Say Major Crimes Was Canceled Too Soon
“No one wanted the show to end … The people who wrote it, the people who acted in it, the crew, studio [Warner Bros.], everyone — we are all grieving the end of Major Crimes,” Duff said, per the New York Post. “We felt the audience would want to grieve with us and that they would need a shock to help them get to that place. I have an obligation as a mystery writer to surprise people — and to give them clues. Creatively and professionally, that was the right way to go.”
Major Crimes is now streaming on Netflix alongside all seven seasons of The Closer.
