Every studio in Hollywood spent the late ’80s and ’90s chasing Die Hard, and most of them ended up making a pale imitation. Die Hard grossed over $140 million worldwide and permanently rewired how Hollywood thought about action movies by introducing the everyman hero template that every thriller for the next decade tried to replicate. Some movies came close, but most fumbled between the second and third acts.
In the summer of 1996, Michael Bay made the only movie that matched Die Hard, and he did it by putting two of the most watchable actors of their respective generations on an island together. The Rock turns 30 this year, and not only has it earned its reputation as a landmark American action movie, but it’s also deemed the perfect Die Hard follow-up.
Why ‘The Rock’ Still Holds Up as One of the Best Action Films of the ’90s
The plot of The Rock is a bit absurd, I’ll admit. A rogue Marine general seizes Alcatraz, takes 81 tourists hostage, and aims nerve gas rockets at San Francisco, threatening to fire them unless the government compensates the families of soldiers who died on classified missions nobody will officially acknowledge. The two men sent to stop him are a beige-Volvo-driving FBI chemical weapons specialist who has never fired a gun in the field, and the only person to ever break out of Alcatraz, who has spent decades in a cell because he once held a microfilm the government didn’t want him to have.
What The Rock understood, and what its imitators missed, is that the Die Hard formula only works when the audience has a reason to care about everyone in the room, including the villain. Ed Harris takes a character who could easily have been presented as a diabolical madman, and gives him subtlety, depth, and most importantly, a sympathetic personality. As a result, General Hummel becomes a good man doing a bad thing for what he thinks is a noble reason. He watched soldiers die on missions that the government buried, filed every grievance through proper channels, and exhausted every legal option. The hostage situation was his last move, and he was never really going to kill anybody with the rockets.
Also, it’s funny how the movie has to introduce a secondary villain in the third act only to give audiences someone to root against, because Hummel makes too compelling a case for himself. And that’s not a flow. It’s the movie doing something different than most summer blockbusters of the 1990s. Harris gives us a villain who is arguably the most likable and relatable character in the entire cast, a man who has done everything by the book his whole life, made the right choices, and trusted his government, even when his government didn’t uphold their end of the bargain.
Nicolas Cage’s Best Characters All Trace Back to His Role in ‘The Rock’
The explosions in The Rock are great, and the Alcatraz setting is perfect. But take Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage out of the film, and the movie becomes a harder sell. In 1996, Cage sat at the center of what tends to be called his golden action era. The run produced movies like Con Air and Face/Off. But Stanley Goodspeed, his character in this movie, is absolutely unmatched. He isn’t brooding or unhinged, and he isn’t cool in any conventional sense. He drives a beige Volvo, has a pregnant girlfriend he hasn’t proposed to yet, and quotes The Beatles in the middle of a hostage crisis. He is a man who reads manuals for a living, thrown into a situation where manuals are completely useless, and Cage plays every moment of that disconnect masterfully.
The reason Goodspeed is relatable even 30 years later is that Cage keeps playing similar characters, in one form or another. Cage is now enjoying a major career resurgence thanks to Spider-Noir, which premiered in May 2026 and currently holds a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. The character, an aging private investigator in 1930s New York who’s dragged back into a world he’d rather leave behind, is also reluctant, prone to flashes of chaos, and overqualified in one specific area and catastrophically underqualified in every other.
Then there’s Sean Connery. The fan theory that Connery’s John Mason is actually an older James Bond has circulated since The Rock released, and the details that support it are hard to miss. Mason was incarcerated on Alcatraz in 1962, the same year Connery debuted as Bond in Dr. No, and the timeline between the two movies line up well. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer addressed the theory directly and shut down the notion that The Rock is a James Bond legacy sequel, but Connery himself was less dismissive, joking that the movie let him kick around as James Bond one final time without technically having to be called James Bond.
Either way, The Rock endures because it has all the ingredients of a great action movie: a ridiculous plot, enormous explosions, Michael Bay’s excess, and a premise that requires you to just go with it sometimes.
