Although Girls’ Last Tour contains no traditional fantasy elements, it views a bleak post-apocalyptic world through the eyes of two young girls exploring civilization’s ruins. Chito and Yuuri travel by half-track motorcycle in search of essentials like food and shelter, filling the hours with ordinary activities such as journaling, collecting books, and washing clothes. An ominous mood hangs over Girls’ Last Tour — the title alone tells you as much — but its sense of inevitable loss is offset by the pair’s sincere determination to find joy in the present. Along the way, Chito and Yuuri uncover relics of humanity’s past and discover beauty in discarded machinery or a long-forgotten poem.

Magic is a double-edged sword in Kamome Shirahama’s Witch Hat Atelier, a gorgeous and deeply heartfelt fantasy anime. After an inexplicable tragedy separates a child named Coco from her mother, she begins training under the gifted witch Qifrey, who has his own reasons for accepting her as an apprentice. As she battles feelings of doubt and inadequacy, Coco discovers magic’s limitless possibilities and the painstaking work required to make those dreams real. Witch Hat Atelier may feature secretive covens and forbidden spells, but Coco’s journey is rooted in wonder and acceptance. In its fantastical world, true joy can come from sharing a meal with dear friends or soaring through a vast blue sky without fear.

Violet Evergarden
Violet Evergarden has little direct overlap with Frieren, but it similarly follows an emotionally detached female protagonist on a journey of self-discovery. Set after the Great War in the land of Telesis, the 13-episode anime centers on a young woman who was raised to be a ruthless weapon. After losing both arms in the final battle, Violet receives prosthetics and begins writing letters for clients as an Auto Memory Doll, essentially a professional ghostwriter. Violet Evergarden is a radical exercise in empathy, following Violet as she learns to connect with strangers’ experiences and, through them, understand her own emotions. The question “What is love?” offers no easy answers, but Violet’s quest to comprehend vulnerability in all its forms is a rewarding one.

Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina
A single look at the white-haired wandering mage Elaina makes the parallels between Frieren and Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina apparent. Elaina takes to the road after growing up with folk stories about the globe-trotting witch Niké. Having endured difficult trials to prove herself as a mage, Elaina embarks on a long journey that gradually deepens her understanding of human life’s transience. Unlike Frieren, Elaina is mortal, and her travels veer between the whimsical and the dangerous in ways she processes from an innately human perspective. Wandering Witch becomes an unconventional coming-of-age story in which Elaina often bears the burden of remaining a neutral observer.
