Taking cues from Mr. Wick and centering on a mysterious lead with an even more mysterious past, the spotlight falls on a stubborn ranch hand that would make Kevin Costner’s John Dutton proud as she refuses to sell her Montana ranch to a ruthless developer.

Of course, where this movie, titled The Last Stand of Ellen Cole, separates itself from the Sheridan-Verse is with the action, as the movie reveals that the titular Ellen Cole is far more than a vulnerable octogenarian. And she has a killer one inch punch. Transforming Insidious star and 82-year-old acclaimed actress Lin Shaye into Baba Yaga in a cowboy hat, Ellen may need an oxygen tank to breathe, but she’ll be attending her enemies’ funerals long before they’re attending hers.

‘The Last Stand of Ellen Cole’ Finally Finds Redemption on Streaming

Directed by Derek Lee and Clif Prowse, the filmmaking duo best known for their well-received found-footage horror movie Afflicted from 2013, The Last Stand of Ellen Cole made its debut with little fanfare in 2024. Starring Liz Caribel Sierra (Blink Twice), Craig Tate (Greyhound), Ty Olsson (War for the Planet of the Apes), Karan Gill (The Road Trip), and Hart Bochner (Die Hard) alongside Shaye, the action thriller flew so far under the radar that it doesn’t even have a Rotten Tomatoes score.

But The Last Stand of Ellen Cole is finally getting its dues thanks to streaming, with audiences declaring the action thriller as “fun and enjoyable,” reminiscent of Rambo meets Home Alone, heaping praise on Lin Shaye’s performance as she unleashes her “unique set of skills,” and with one user warning that “Jackie Chan better watch his ass.
