There was a time when Lost was more than just a television show. It was an obsession. Every episode introduced new mysteries, every character seemed to be hiding something, and every Wednesday night left viewers with more questions than answers. In the fall of 2004, nobody knew what was happening on the Island, and that was a huge part of the fun.
Premiering on Oct. 27, 2004, “House of the Rising Sun” arrives just six episodes into Lost’s first season, yet perfectly captures what makes the series so addictive. While Jack (Matthew Fox) and Kate (Evangeline Lilly) explore a mysterious cave, tensions escalate among the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Meanwhile, flashbacks reveal surprising details about the troubled marriage of Sun (Yunjin Kim) and Jin (Daniel Dae Kim), two characters who have largely remained mysteries themselves.
Twenty-two years later, with Lost available to stream on Hulu, “House of the Rising Sun” is a reminder of how exciting those early days were. The characters are still getting to know one another, the Island is filled with secrets, and audiences have no idea just how wild things are going to get.
Sun and Jin become more than supporting characters
For the first five episodes, Sun and Jin are largely defined by their isolation from the other survivors. Neither appears to speak English, and Jin’s controlling behavior makes their marriage increasingly uncomfortable. But “House of the Rising Sun” changes our understanding of both characters, demonstrating one of Lost’s greatest strengths: using flashbacks to reveal that people are more complicated than they appear.
Through Sun’s memories, we learn that she and Jin begin their relationship deeply in love, only for their marriage to deteriorate after he begins working for her wealthy father. Jin becomes increasingly distant, and his work takes a disturbing turn when he returns home with blood on his clothes. Meanwhile, Sun secretly learns English and plans to escape both her husband and her father’s influence, leaving Jin behind at the airport.
But when the moment arrives, Jin offers Sun a simple gesture of affection, reminding her of the man she fell in love with. She decides to stay, abandoning her escape plan and boarding Oceanic Flight 815 with him. It’s a touching moment, made more heartbreaking by the trouble in their marriage. Back on the Island, Sun’s secret ability to speak English also changes how we view her interactions with the other survivors.
The episode doesn’t excuse Jin’s behavior, particularly his violent confrontation with Michael (Harold Perrineau), but it begins peeling back the layers of a relationship that becomes one of the series’ most emotionally compelling stories.
The Island’s mysteries are just getting started
If the Sun and Jin flashbacks demonstrate Lost‘s skill with character development, discoveries elsewhere on the Island remind us why the show becomes such an irresistible mystery. While exploring caves that could provide fresh water and shelter, Jack and Kate discover two skeletons lying together. Locke (Terry O’Quinn) names them Adam and Eve, but the discovery raises some serious questions.
Who are these people? How long have they been dead? And why does one of the bodies have a pouch containing two stones, one black and one white? It’s exactly the sort of detail Lost fans obsessed over. The show offers just enough information to make the discovery intriguing, then leaves viewers to speculate. The identities of Adam and Eve aren’t revealed until season 6, making this one of the earliest mysteries to receive an answer until the final season.
Elsewhere, Locke continues establishing himself as one of the island’s most fascinating residents. He helps Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) recover his missing guitar while encouraging him to give up heroin. Locke’s confidence that the Island will provide what Charlie needs offers another glimpse into his growing belief that their crash is more than an accident.
There’s also the simmering attraction between Jack and Kate, whose relationship is still in its earliest stages. Knowing where these characters eventually end up only makes their early interactions more fascinating.
The survivors begin choosing sides
One of the more interesting developments in “House of the Rising Sun” involves something less mysterious than ancient skeletons: a disagreement over where everyone should live. Jack believes the survivors should move to the caves, where they have fresh water and shelter. Sayid (Naveen Andrews) wants to remain on the beach, arguing that it’s their best chance of being spotted by rescuers.
It’s a practical disagreement, but it also represents one of the show’s central conflicts. Some survivors are beginning to accept the Island as their new home, while others remain determined to escape. The decision divides the group, with characters choosing where they believe their best chance of survival lies.
The episode closes with a beautiful montage set to Willie Nelson’s “Are You Sure,” as the survivors settle into their respective camps. It’s a poignant ending, capturing the loneliness, uncertainty, and fragile connections forming among people suddenly stranded together. After an hour filled with arguments, revelations, and unanswered questions, the song offers a moment to reflect on everything these characters have lost.
Looking back, it’s easy to focus on the mysteries Lost eventually answers, the ones it doesn’t, and whether its final seasons live up to the extraordinary promise of its first two. But “House of the Rising Sun” reminds us why so many viewers become hooked in the first place. The show understands that keeping an audience guessing isn’t just about another strange discovery. It’s about making us care enough about the people involved to desperately want to know what happens next.
And in October 2004, there were few things on television more exciting than wondering what Lost had in store for us the following Wednesday.
