Yuno is one of Black Clover’s most naturally gifted characters, and the anime has never been particularly subtle about it. He received a rare four-leaf grimoire, was chosen by the Wind Spirit Sylph, and mastered advanced techniques at a speed that would take most Magic Knights years to match. Even so, the anime has introduced several characters operating beyond his current level.
They possess mana, magical abilities or sheer combat experience beyond anything Yuno can reliably overcome at this stage of the story. Some have already defeated him, and others possess powers that give even the strongest Magic Knights no room for error. From legendary elves and devils to the Wizard King himself, these characters represent the level Yuno is yet to surpass.
Zenon Zogratis Already Proved He Could Overwhelm Yuno
When Zenon attacks the Golden Dawn headquarters, Yuno returns to find his squad being destroyed by the Dark Disciple Gaderois and Zenon’s forces. Yuno defeats Gaderois and eventually confronts Zenon himself, but the battle immediately demonstrates that the two are fighting at completely different levels. Even Spirit Dive is not enough. Zenon combines his Bone Magic with the power granted by Beelzebub, producing large quantities of bones that can overwhelm opponents from practically every direction.
Yuno manages to defend himself and fight back, but Zenon ultimately defeats him and leaves him severely wounded. This is the same Yuno who has fought elves, survived Zagred, and grown tremendously since becoming a Magic Knight. Zenon still breaks through him. Yuno’s greatest strengths include his exceptional mana sensitivity and his ability to manipulate surrounding mana through Mana Zone. Zenon possesses a supernatural ability capable of interfering with the very resource Yuno normally dominates.
Dante Zogratis Is Almost Impossible to Put Down Permanently
The leader of the Dark Triad possesses Body Magic alongside the Gravity Magic granted by Lucifero, giving him an absurd combination of offensive power and survivability. Gravity Magic alone could make a fight with Dante extraordinarily difficult for Yuno. Yuno’s Wind Magic gives him exceptional mobility, allowing him to move through the air and reposition himself incredibly quickly. However, Dante can manipulate gravity across the battlefield, fundamentally changing how freely anyone around him can move.
Dante can also increase gravitational pressure across a huge area. Yuno could potentially use Mana Zone and Spirit Dive to maintain mobility longer than most mages, but surviving Dante’s offense would only solve half the problem. Dante’s Body Magic gives him extraordinary regenerative abilities. Severe injuries that should end a battle can simply be repaired. Yuno would need to repeatedly overcome Gravity Magic, survive Dante’s attacks, and somehow exhaust a regenerating opponent whose devil power gives him enormous magical reserves.
Fighting Zagred Alone Would Be Impossible for Yuno
Yuno played an important role in defeating Zagred, but that does not mean he was anywhere near Zagred’s level. The Word Soul Magic devil was one of the first enemies to demonstrate just how insignificant even powerful human and elf mages could look beside a genuine high-ranking supernatural threat. Zagred’s magic is terrifying because it makes language itself become a weapon. His Word Soul Magic allows spoken commands to influence his surroundings, creating physical objects and manipulating phenomena through his words.
His enormous mana reserves further amplify those abilities, giving him more magical power than even exceptionally powerful elves. Yuno cannot simply overpower that with Wind Magic. More importantly, Zagred’s otherworldly nature makes him extraordinarily difficult to kill. Yuno is crucial to Zafred’s eventual defeat, but that victory is fundamentally a team accomplishment. Remove Licht, Lumiere, Yami, Asta and the others, and Yuno suddenly has to solve problems he has never demonstrated an ability to handle alone.
Licht Overwhelmed Yuno Without Even Being Fully Himself
Few moments demonstrate the difference between being talented and being truly legendary better than Yuno and Asta encountering Licht. He is not even completely conscious when he battles them. Licht possesses extraordinary natural mana as the leader of the Elf Tribe, along with Sword Magic and the weapons that would eventually become associated with Asta’s grimoire. He originally owned the swords Asta later uses with Anti-Magic, meaning his fighting style combines tremendous magical power with incredible close-range swordsmanship.
Yuno and Asta attack him together, but Licht still overwhelms them. Yuno is regularly praised for possessing tremendous magical talent. His ability to manipulate mana comes naturally enough that he learns advanced techniques at an astonishing pace. However, Licht belongs to a race naturally blessed with enormous mana reserves, and even among the elves, he stands apart. An incompletely awakened Licht could handle Asta and Yuno together. Yuno would be no match for a fully conscious Licht.
Julius Novachrono’s Time Magic Is Almost Unfair
Raw magical power is not the only reason Julius Novachrono remains above Yuno. His magic is simply absurd. The Wizard King possesses Time Magic, allowing him to manipulate one resource practically every opponent needs but almost nobody can defend normally. Julius can restrain targets through temporal magic, accelerate the effects of time, and steal time from opponents for later use. He combines those abilities with exceptional Mana Zone mastery, allowing him to perceive changes across the battlefield and react with remarkable speed.
Speed is one of Yuno’s greatest advantages. Spirit Dive and Wind Magic allow him to move extraordinarily quickly, while Mana Zone helps him detect attacks and manipulate magic throughout the surrounding space. Julius essentially possesses an advanced answer to the same strategy. He can read changes in mana through Mana Zone while manipulating time itself to improve his reactions. Yuno may be a future Wizard King candidate, but Julius shows just how terrifying someone worthy of that title can actually become.
