A comedy franchise is being rebooted with a new TV series a decade after the last feature film hit theaters. This will mark the second series for the franchise, after the short-lived original only lasted one season 21 years ago.
The Barbershop franchise was launched in 2002 with the release of the first feature film in movie theaters. It was given two direct sequels along with a spinoff movie and the ill-fated sitcom. Amazon’s bringing it back with an all-new Barbershop series that is set to debut on Prime Video on Feb. 10, 2027. Months ahead of the release, the first teaser trailer has arrived, offering fans of the franchise a sneak peek at the next chapter. Check it out below.
Barbershop Gets Rebooted With a Prime Video Series
The new series is set in the same cinematic universe as the previous installments. It follows Jermaine Fowler as Trav, a rising barber who’s trying to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and carry on his legacy. Marshall Todd, who co-wrote the original film, also served as a writer on the series. There are references to the movies, such as the setting the story at Calvin’s, the iconic Chicago barbershop from the films. Otherwise, the cast of characters is all new.
The synopsis reads, “Travis ‘Trav’ Walker (Fowler) returns to Chicago hoping to honor his grandfather’s legacy at the iconic Calvin’s barbershop, but the shop has changed, and so has the city. As Trav struggles to find his place among a new crew of barbers and loyal customers, Calvin’s remains what it’s always been, a place for sharp fades, sharp opinions, and a community that always has something to say.”
An All-New Cast of Characters Is Introduced
Along with Fowler, other Barbershop stars include Brett Gray (On My Block), Punkie Johnson (Saturday Night Live), Roy Wood Jr. (The Daily Show), E.J. Bonilla (Law & Order: SVU), Bresha Webb (Love That Girl!), Bokeem Woodbine (Dexter: Resurrection), Tiana Okoye (Abbott Elementary), and Langston Kerman (Insecure).
Guest stars include Zack Fox (Abbott Elementary), Ego Nwodim (Saturday Night Live), Diallo Riddle (South Side), Ziwe (Ziwe), Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Comedian CP (How to Die Alone), Devon Walker (Saturday Night Live), and Belmont Cameli (Saved by the Bell).
Marshall Todd serves as co-showrunner alongside Max Searle. Both are also executive producers along with Kevin Hart, Bryan Smiley, Mike Stein, and Tiffany Brown for Hartbea; Bradley Gardner for Busy B Entertainment; Cameron Burnett and Autumn Bailey-Ford for Prominent Productions; George L. Tillman and Robert Teitel for State Street Pictures; Jermaine Fowler; and Oz Rodriguez.
Prime Video’s Barbershop series will debut on Feb. 10, 2027. All eight episodes will be premiering simultaneously.
