7 Biggest Questions After ‘Tracker’ Season 4, Episode 1

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Tracker Season 1, Episode 4, “Safe Harbor.”Tracker Season 4 premiered on CBS on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, and the first episode, “Safe Harbor,” proves that the series is off to a fairly solid start. The premiere of the popular action thriller sticks to the show’s familiar premise: Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) takes on a missing-person case that quickly turns into something bigger. What starts with a teenager looking for his missing father eventually leads Colter to a human trafficking operation at the Port of Los Angeles. He rescues the victims and brings the case to a close.

I like that the premiere doesn’t try to reinvent itself. Tracker is still Tracker. Colter is still following strange clues, Randy is still doing computer work from afar, and Reenie is still handling the legal side of things. However, Season 3 left us with many questions about the Shaw family that are still top of mind. Colter is left in the dark about his childhood; Colter’s brother Russell (Jensen Ackles) walked away with a secret about Colter, and Ashton Shaw’s old truck is still sitting in a garage. So, now that a new case has been wrapped up, these are the questions that I’m asking myself while waiting for the rest of Tracker Season 4.

Is the Port Trafficking Ring Really Over?

Let’s start with the obvious question. It appears that Colter has shut the case down. He kills the man running the operation, rescues Stephanie, and learns that several people came to the port expecting jobs. The police thank him and say the victims will return to their families.

Still, Reenie learns about the involvement of a Russian organization, and nothing in the episode indicates the group is gone. I think that Tracker will leave it behind, since case-of-the-week villains rarely return in procedurals, but it’s worth noting that this is a loose end that we’ll be thinking about leading into Tracker Season 4, Episode 2.

Why Did ‘Tracker’ Move to California, and Will Colter Keep Traveling?

Season 4 is the first time Tracker has left Vancouver. Season 4 filmed in Los Angeles, which is probably the biggest behind-the-scenes change. For three seasons, Vancouver stood in for the many states Colter visits as a rewardist, so I noticed the change right away. The Tracker Season 4 promo showed Colter searching the Port of Los Angeles for a missing father, which set the tone for the case in “Safe Harbor.”

Showrunner Elwood Reid said location is a big part of the show’s storytelling (via Deadline). The California setting means deserts and other new landscapes. Tracker isn’t likely to turn into a crime drama set in Los Angeles. However, my question is whether Colter will keep crossing the country or settle down in California. After all, Tracker is a road show, and it works best when Colter keeps moving. The setting could give the season a fresh look, though.

Could Charlie Become Part of Colter’s Life?

This is my favorite character-related question after the premiere. Charlie is the main driving force of this episode. Charlie reports that his father, Shawn, is missing, but initially describes himself as Shawn’s brother. He overhears Colter talking to Randy and follows him on a bicycle. He even looks after his younger brother Hank. When Colter brings Shawn home, Charlie asks what he owes him. Colter tells him to study hard, get a job, succeed in life, and find him.

There is something very fatherly about that exchange. Colter lost his father, and Season 3 showed that Ashton was a more complicated man than Colter believed. Colter’s advice stood out to me. While it doesn’t seem necessary for Charlie to become a permanent character, since plenty of people have passed through Colter’s life, I would welcome a greater presence from Charlie.

What’s Next for Reenie, and When Will Mel Come Back?

Reenie sitting in her office in Tracker.

Reenie’s character arc has grown a lot since the early seasons of Tracker. Her abduction in Season 2 shaped Season 3, when she learns to box and buys a gun while dealing with lawsuit-related stalking and threats. In Season 4, Episode 1, she and a co-worker are discussing a case, and they begin talking about her dating life. When Adam’s name comes up, Reenie’s reaction lets us know that she cares about him.

Tracker Season 4 has introduced Adam Shevlin as a recurring character who has a history with Reenie. He’s also a private investigator who works for high-end law firms and has a “bad-boy undercurrent.” Instead of seeming like a random addition, he fits into the world of Tracker. While I’m curious about what happened between them, I’m even more interested in seeing what Reenie’s life looks like outside the office.

Mel Day also needs attention throughout the rest of the season. Cassidy McClincy Zhang’s Mel was introduced in Season 3, Episode 3, “First Fire.” Mel tells Reenie that her mother, an Army logistics officer, was killed in her car at a rest stop when Mel was 16. While Mel is now a series regular on Tracker, she doesn’t appear in Season 4, Episode 1. We can’t forget that Colter hasn’t met her yet. So far, all we know is that she’s part of the main ensemble.

What Is the Case in Colter’s Dog-Eared Notebook?

Colter flipping through a book in his trailer in Tracker

One detail from the opening scene stuck with me. Before Randy calls about Shawn, we see Colter flipping through a notebook of his cases, some marked completed. He pauses on a dog-eared page for an ongoing case. The notes describe two failed attempts, someone not being on site, a follow-up conversation two days later with someone named M, and a woman seen getting into a car.

The entry ends with one question written in bold: “WHOSE CAR WAS IT?” Episode 1 never answers this question, but the entry reads like a missing person case. I think Tracker planted this to show that Colter is always working on cases between episodes. This doesn’t necessarily mean that this mystery is connected to the Ashton storyline. However, I definitely want to know who M is.

Where Is Russell, and When Will He Return?

Jensen Ackles as Russell Shaw in Tracker

Russell leaves the series at the end of Season 3 after McIntyre offers him a deal: take one more job, and the file about Colter will stay buried. Before Russell leaves town, he calls Reenie and makes her promise to keep Colter off his trail, which puts Reenie in the middle.

Although Russell doesn’t come back in Episode 1, the wait won’t be too long. Showrunner Reid said that Jensen Ackles will return in Episode 5, and he hopes to bring Russell back for a bigger block of episodes later. Justin Hartley told TV Insider that Ackles could appear in a few more episodes in the new year. Of course, Ackles’s busy schedule may limit how much Russell appears, but I expect each appearance to matter when it comes to the larger storyline about Colter’s childhood.

What Did Ashton Do to Colter?

Brent Sexton and Justin Hartley in Tracker

This is the biggest question that we all likely have after the Tracker Season 4 premiere. In the Season 3 finale, “The Best Ones,” McIntyre gives Russell a file saying Ashton did something to Colter when Colter was a child. Since Russell took a deal to ensure the Chrono Stasis file stays buried, Colter still doesn’t know it exists. Episode 1 never touches on this subject, which makes sense since this was the season premiere, but the mystery continues.

Ashton’s old truck adds to the intrigue. John Keaton brought the damaged truck to Colter at the end of the finale, and Colter remembered working on it with his father. The damage could be connected to the file. If it is, fixing the truck could push Colter toward a painful truth.
