The most successful Stephen King adaptations aren’t necessarily the most faithful. King’s name has become a brand in itself, promising versatility across more than 60 books and nearly 200 short stories. His writing is engaging and accessible, lending itself to excellent genre stories that shine on the big screen. But with such an abundant body of work, the quality of the resulting adaptations varies wildly.
In some cases, like The Lawnmower Man (1992), the adaptation has little to no connection to King’s original story — and isn’t well-made, either. Then there’s Andy Muschietti’s It movies, which have plenty of merits and even make some improvements, despite their flaws. By streamlining King’s stories, expanding certain characters, or making audacious departures from the books, they improve upon his work in unexpected ways. Here are 10 Stephen King movies that are better than the books they adapted.
1
The Mist (2007)
Endings can make or break a story, especially one as tight-paced and devastating as The Mist. Frank Darabont’s film opts for a depressing ending that even King didn’t anticipate — the author actually prefers the film’s ending to his own novella. By squashing all hope for protagonist David Drayton, The Mist becomes a cautionary tale about mob mentality and the dangers of giving up on hope. Even before arriving at such a bleak conclusion, Darabont ditches the source material’s slow-burn approach to opt for a narrative that feels like a relentless survival horror. The claustrophobia of being trapped inside a local supermarket is captured brilliantly, along with the evils of religious fanaticism, which can be more terrifying than eldritch beasts on occasion.
2
Stand By Me (1986)
King’s 1982 novella, The Body, is the basis for Rob Reiner’s heartbreaking adaptation, Stand By Me. Although The Body is spectacular in its portrayal of grief and childhood nostalgia, Stand By Me streamlines a meandering coming-of-age tale, giving it more hard-hitting focus. Reiner cuts down most of the bleakness from the novella in favor of a more grounded examination of childhood, allowing certain characters to get closure and take slightly different routes. The core cast of child actors, including a talented River Phoenix, deliver sincere performances, allowing the film to capture the fleeting friendships that define growing up, but never surface again.
3
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Mike Flanagan has proven his knack for tackling King’s source material with Doctor Sleep, a follow-up to The Shining that revolves around an adult Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) and revisits the horrors of the Overlook Hotel. King had famously disliked Stanley Kubrick’s rendition of The Shining, and Flanagan does his due diligence by paying tribute to both interpretations of the story. His Doctor Sleep also respects the underlying impulses of the source material, even though Flanagan improves upon it with a tighter pacing and a more satisfying climax. This is one of the rare instances where an antagonist feels more threatening onscreen than in the pages of a book, which is a commendable feat in its own right.
4
The Life of Chuck (2024)
Another Flanagan adaptation that outshines King’s book, The Life of Chuck makes great use of a competent foundation to add more layers to the tale of Charles “Chuck” Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). King’s novella follows a reverse-chronological structure that is tricky to adapt on screen, but Flanagan accomplishes this with ease. Competent character writing is one of Flanagan’s greatest strengths as a storyteller, along with his understanding of the human condition, which also includes grief. These qualities make Life of Chuck an atypical film, as it successfully translates some of the best moments from the book into unforgettable spectacle.
5
The Long Walk (2025)
Francis Lawrence’s The Long Walk is easily one of the best Stephen King adaptations in years. The film grounds the novel’s dystopian premise with expanded world-building, adding more impetus to the walk in question and why it’s important. As in the source material, the relationship between the characters is paramount, but Lawrence hones in on Ray Garraty (Cooper Hoffman) and Peter McVries (David Jonsson) to flesh out a more tactile bond. This emotional aspect radically improves an already solid source material, while an altered ending adds much-needed punch to a rather morose setting.
6
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
The differences between The Shawshank Redemption and King’s Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption are vast, as the Frank Darabont film takes a more dramatic approach suited in the cinematic medium. This not only yields a compelling movie, but also a wonderful adaptation, as Darabont takes the liberty of tweaking character arcs and shaping a more powerful ending. For example, Brooks Hatlen (James Whitmore) is a minor character in the book, but the film makes good use of his heartbreaking arc to highlight the psychological impact of prolonged institutionalization. There are also higher stakes peppered throughout, combined with Red’s (Morgan Freeman) unforgettable narration that makes the world feel more visceral and lived-in.
7
The Dead Zone (1983)
It’s tough to argue in favor of a better adaptation when it comes to The Dead Zone, a brilliant book that features some of the richest character studies from King. That said, David Cronenberg’s film is an anomaly of sorts, as it effectively sharpens narrative focus without sacrificing the heartbreaking highlights of the novel. Although the novel has more room to examine the banality of evil, Cronenberg trims subplots to pace this engaging story like a tense thriller. This version of Johnny Smith (Christopher Walken) also feels more isolated and haunted, opting for a quieter (and more relatable) sense of exhaustion due to his unpredictable psychic powers.
8
The Shining (1980)
“I think ‘The Shining’ is a beautiful film and it looks terrific, and as I’ve said before, it’s like a big, beautiful Cadillac with no engine inside it.” This is what King had to say about Kubrick’s celebrated adaptation, which is (rightfully) lauded as one of the best horror movies ever made. This is a rather complex situation, as King’s novel does offer a more nuanced examination of its characters, and is backed by greater emotional weight defining Jack and Wendy Torrance.
That said, Kubrick’s version is a cinematic masterpiece that turns the Overlook Hotel’s atmospheric terror into iconic pop culture imagery. The narrative is tight and unrelenting, painting an unnerving picture of Jack’s descent into madness, which is cushioned by unforgettable performances by Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. Although “better” will always be subjective, Kubrick’s film is deliberately (and quite literally) colder, ending on an ambiguous note that still fuels endless theories and debates.
9
Carrie (1976)
Carrie was King’s first published book. It has influenced several adaptations, including Flanagan’s eight-episode series that hews closer to the source material (while taking some hefty liberties). Brian De Palma’s 1976 film, however, has colored our perception of Carrie White and what she stands for, even if that interpretation wildly diverges from the one in King’s novel. Even so, De Palma doesn’t opt for the novel’s epistolary structure to tell the story, as a more clean-cut and linear narrative makes for a sharper film. De Palma’s love for stylistic flair adds an edge to the prom sequence at the end, but the film succeeds in conveying the agonizing cruelty of growing up with thoughtless bullies.
10
Misery (1990)
Rob Reiner’s Misery is a more effective thriller than the one woven in the book, thanks to Kathy Bates’ Oscar-winning performance as Annie Wilkes, who brings a chilling magnetism to the character onscreen. Reiner also cut down on several asides and side-stories to keep the focus streamlined, which bodes well for a thriller that relies on escalating tension (and violence) to scare audiences. What remains is a heart-thumping cat-and-mouse game that brings some of the most iconic book moments to life. There’s also a sense of grim humor that blends well with the suffocating tension, making Misery a more balanced tale about obsessive fandom and creative control.
