Even four years after the series ended, Westworld remains one of the greatest cyberpunk sci-fi remakes in television history. Over the last few decades, HBO has become renowned for producing some of the most celebrated, critically acclaimed, high-quality original series ever put on screen.
Westworld premiered with its first season, subtitled The Maze, in October 2016, and ultimately ran for three more seasons: The Door, The New World, and The Choice. Created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the series was planned to conclude with a fifth and final season, but HBO canceled Westworld before it could reach a satisfying ending. Looking back, Westworld is one of HBO’s greatest series ever anda perfect sci-fi remake of a 1970s cult classic.
Westworld Is Still One of HBO’s Best Sci-Fi Shows
Westworld brought the story of writer and director Michael Crichton’s original 1973 movie, Westworld, and, loosely, its 1976 sequel, Futureworld, into the modern day. With advanced filmmaking techniques and significantly improved visual effects, HBO’s Westworld surpasses Crichton’s original movie in nearly every way, even in narrative development and story structure.
This makes it one of TV’s most impressive and powerful remakes, and without a doubt one of HBO’s greatest sci-fi shows. Given its conceptual ambition, massive production scale, and profound philosophical depth, it’s easy to understand why Westworld became so popular.
The series begins in Westworld, a technologically advanced, Wild West-themed amusement park founded by Delos Inc. in the South China Sea. Delos welcomes human guests to the park, who can interact with lifelike android hosts. The hosts are programmed to run a daily narrative that guests can join, but some use them to live out their darkest desires.
The first season not only follows some of these narratives, but also shows Delos dealing with hosts’ erratic behavior after the park’s director, Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), implements a new “Reverie” update that causes some hosts to regain erased memories and become sentient.
This triggers a chain of events that leads to an epic host revolution in Westworld, with some trying to escape the park to reach their afterlife and others escaping to the outside world. What started as a futuristic Western about a high-tech theme park quickly evolved into an expansive and seriously impressive cyberpunk epic in its later seasons.
Though its later seasons polarized audiences and its untimely cancellation left it with an unresolved mystery, Westworld stands as a definitive masterpiece of modern prestige television. It completely flips Michael Crichton’s original story, which was little more than a slasher movie where the haunting monster happened to be a robot cowboy.
Westworld Is the Perfect Sci-Fi Remake of a 1970s Movie
While the early seasons of HBO’s Westworld followed a narrative similar to Crichton’s 1973 movie, focusing on a high-tech theme park where human guests interact with realistic robots, the two productions approach the story with entirely different structures, perspectives, and thematic depth.
The park’s failure, the lead star’s perspective, the ensemble’s scale, and how the park functions all differ sharply in the HBO series. The original movie primarily follows Peter Martin (Richard Benjamin), a first-time Delos visitor who attends Westworld with his friend and repeat visitor John Blane (James Brolin).
The pair experience the Gunslinger (Yul Brynner) narrative, which allows them to participate in gunfights using firearms that prevent them and the robotic hosts from shooting organic beings. However, a computer virus in Medieval World and Roman World spreads to Westworld, causing the robots to run amok and gain the ability to harm human guests.
After a night with two android prostitutes, Peter and John, unaware of the park’s shutdown, revisit the Gunslinger, only for the robot to end up shooting John dead and forcing Peter to run for his life. This kicks off a wild cat-and-mouse chase that feels like a typical slasher horror movie.
The HBO remake flips the story, most notably by giving Westworld’s hosts more depth and development, so the audience experiences their trauma, evolving memories, and the slow growth of their artificial consciousness. In the 1973 movie, Westworld’s troubles stem from a sudden, unplanned computer malfunction, while the park’s system breakdown in the HBO series is philosophical, intentional, and existential.
It shows the hosts fighting back against decades of human abuse, rather than a simple technical glitch. HBO’s Westworld makes its ensemble and story more meaningful and poignant, turning techno-horror about corporate greed into a show that explores deeper themes.
Westworld’s New Future Has a Huge Challenge to Overcome
It was first reported in May 2026 that screenwriter David Koepp would develop a new remake of Michael Crichton’s Westworld, completely disconnected from the HBO series, despite also being produced by Warner Bros. 1973’s Westworld has endured as a beloved cult classic, and the fact that another remake is on the way proves its long-lasting themes.
Unfortunately, HBO’s Westworld will be completely removed from the equation. Koepp’s Westworld faces another challenge after the TV show’s cancellation. Namely, Westworld has already become one of the most impressive, thought-provoking, and emotionally resonant television series in history.
Any future remake will struggle to match that impact, especially one confined to a feature-film runtime rather than four seasons of prestige TV. Sure, Westworld’s ratings declined over its run, but the series remained highly regarded, and fans were excited about plans to conclude the show with a fifth and final season.
HBO’s Westworld boasts movie-level production values, an incredible ensemble cast including Jeffrey Wright, Thandiwe Newton, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, Luke Hemsworth, Ed Harris, Tessa Thompson, and more, and raises seriously powerful, philosophically rich questions that set it apart from other recent sci-fi series.
Westworld‘s later seasons defined the cyberpunk subgenre, alienating some viewers. However, it further cemented the sci-fi remake as one of HBO’s most influential shows, so only time will tell what the future holds.
