JRPGs typically allow players to control a large cast of characters, but the size of that party can vary. While some JRPGs have smaller casts, other classic games, like Final Fantasy 6, have more than 10 playable characters, allowing players to pick and choose their favorites throughout the playthrough.
Many of the best JRPGs manage to create well-developed characters despite their large roster, making players feel attached to every character they control. JRPGs with big parties can also offer more varied gameplay, and watching these characters interact with each other can be a huge part of the fun.
Valkyrie Profile Is a Classic PS1 Game
Valkyrie Profile is a unique game that is heavily inspired by Norse mythology. Players control Lenneth, a Valkyrie tasked with recruiting the souls of dead heroes, to either fight with her in Ragnarok or go back to Valhalla. There are a total of 24 playable characters, with 21 being recruitable by Lenneth.
The turn-based battle system involves the entire party sharing a turn. If Lenneth is defeated in battle, players only have three turns to revive her before the party is defeated. Valkyrie Profile is divided into chapters, and each chapter requires at least one recruitable character to be sent back to Valhalla.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III Builds On an Epic Series
Trails of Cold Steel follows the protagonist, Rean Schwarzer, first as a student in Class VII and later as an instructor in Trails of Cold Steel III. The game features a roster of 25 characters, and this time around, characters other than Rean are also able to pilot mechs in combat.
The battle system remains turn-based but feels smoother than in previous entries, as the controller’s directional pad and face buttons can be used to issue commands quickly to each character. Trails of Cold Steel III also keeps battles interesting with special moves like Brave Orders and Arts.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses Is the Most Popular Game in the Franchise
Fire Emblem is a classic tactical JRPG franchise from Nintendo that always offers large casts of characters to choose from. Three Houses is no exception and offers 34 playable characters and 40 if playing The Cindered Shadows DLC, though it’s not possible to get every character in a single playthrough.
Three Houses is considered to be one of the best Fire Emblem games, and a major reason it’s so popular is its branching story. The game offers three main paths to choose from the beginning: Black Eagles, Blue Lions, or Golden Deer, but there’s also a fourth route for players to explore, giving it plenty of replayability.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Is the Spiritual Successor to Suikoden
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes‘ lead developer worked on Suikoden and Suikoden II, and it shows. Funded by Kickstarter, Eiyuden Chronicle lives up to its name and offers 100+ characters, and every one of them is unique. They even have their own backstories and have voice acting.
The game has gorgeous 2.5D graphics with amazing background and combat visuals. Eiyuden Chronicle‘s large cast of characters gives players countless combinations to choose from when forming their parties and deciding on battle tactics. The sheer number of character options mixed with classic JRPG goodness makes it a must-play game.
Triangle Strategy Is Perfect for Strategy RPG Lovers
Triangle Strategy was made by the developers of Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default, but the combat and gameplay are similar to Fire Emblem games. However, it doesn’t have permadeath, and when a unit dies, they just leave the battlefield, so it’s a great option for newcomers.
There’s a massive cast in Triangle Strategy, with 30 playable characters the player can recruit. Every character has multiple classes, giving players customization options. Triangle Strategy also offers branching paths and multiple endings based on the choices the player can make throughout the game.
Xenoblade Chronicles X Is One of the Best JRPGs On the Switch
Xenoblade Chronicles X stands out from other titles in the series. The protagonist is a player-created avatar instead of a set character, and players can pilot mecha as they explore the game’s massive open world. Throughout the game, players can obtain a total of 22 playable characters.
While Xenoblade Chronicles X was originally released on the Wii U, it recently got a remaster on the Nintendo Switch. This version is one of the best RPGs of 2025 and adds quality of life updates and four new characters, making it an even bigger game.
Chrono Cross Is a Sequel to One of the Best JRPGs Ever
Chrono Cross had big shoes to fill. It’s the follow-up to Chrono Trigger, which is constantly referred to as one of the best sci-fi JRPGs of all time. While it’s not a true sequel, Chrono Cross itself is a fantastic game and offers 45 playable characters to choose from.
Forgetting that Chrono Cross is a sequel makes it a more enjoyable experience. The story is interesting as it takes place across two parallel dimensions. Chrono Cross has multiple endings, New Game+, and players can run from any battle, including boss battles, so it’s definitely worth players’ time.
Suikoden II Is a PS1 Hidden Gem
The inspiration for Eiyuden Chronicle, Suikoden II was released on PlayStation in 1999. It also had over 100 recruitable characters and multiple combat options. There are traditional battles with up to six characters on both sides of the battlefield, duels between two characters, and war battles that put characters on a grid system similar to tactical RPGs like Fire Emblem.
While the war battles in Suikoden II can be fun, they’re also a little tricky and inherently confusing. Characters who die in war battles are permanently dead, so players may find themselves appreciating Suikoden II‘s massive cast.
Star Ocean: The Second Story R Is a Near-Perfect Remake
Star Ocean: The Second Story isn’t as well-known as Final Fantasy VII, but some would argue that it’s the best JRPG on the PS1. There are a total of 13 playable characters, but not all of them can be obtained at the same time.
The remake, Star Ocean: The Second Story R, looks fantastic with the 2.5D visuals. Star Ocean: The Second Story‘s fast-paced combat is smooth and offers a nice change from most turn-based games in the genre. The game also has 99 endings that change depending on player choices and the characters they befriend throughout the game.
Final Fantasy VI Is a Timeless Classic in the Franchise
Final Fantasy VI is one of the best SNES RPGs, with many fans claiming that it’s the greatest game in the series. It also offers a large cast of 14 playable characters with the ability to teach magic to many of them, which opens up more customizable options for combat and party composition.
The story and characters in Final Fantasy VI are all memorable, with Kefka being one of the best villains in the franchise. Its legacy, great overall game, and the fact that it has the most playable characters of a mainline Final Fantasy title cement this as the best JRPG with over 10 playable characters.
