8 Classic Sci-Fi Series That Are Now Unwatchable

The tricky thing about calling a TV show a “classic” is that the label can mean different things. Some series changed television forever, while others captured the imagination of an entire generation. A few have survived largely because nostalgia makes their flaws easier to overlook. As we move further into the 21st century, shows from the 1980s and 190s are starting to earn that classic status, mainly because modern audiences have grown accustomed to faster pacing and sharper visuals.

This is particularly noticeable in science fiction, a genre built on imaginative concepts and dependent on good execution. Great writing, convincing special effects, and themes that age well can mean that people can enjoy a TV show for decades. Unfortunately, not every pioneering sci-fi series has aged gracefully. From sluggish storylines to dated ideas, some classic sci-fi shows are important to the genre, but they can be tough to watch today.

Honorable Mentions

‘Land of the Lost’ (1974 – 1976): Land of the Lost is a Saturday-morning family adventure series that mixes dinosaurs, parallel dimensions, and masterful world-building. It has a nostalgic appeal due to its ambitious premise. However, the puppet monsters and zippered monster suits look artificial and laughable instead of chilling. It couldn’t be included on the main list because it remains a cult favorite.

‘The Six Million Dollar Man’ (1974 – 1978): Lee Majors’ slow-motion running and his famous bionic hero turned him into a pop-culture icon. The Six Million Dollar Man also helped establish the appeal of sci-fi shows created around technological advancements. However, its action, repetitive sound effects, and formulaic missions feel dated now.

‘Babylon 5’ (1993 – 1998)

A Groundbreaking Space Opera With Effects That Haven’t Aged Gracefully

Babylon 5 Cast PTEN

Why It’s Considered a Classic: Babylon 5 helped redefine serialized science fiction television with a carefully planned, multi-season story about alien civilizations, political conflict, and an impending interstellar war. Creator J. Michael Straczynski mapped out an overarching narrative at a time when many shows were still delivering self-contained episodes. The storytelling is ambitious, and the series also breaks technical ground.

Why It’s Unwatchable Today: The writing remains Babylon 5’s strongest asset. However, the presentation can be a hurdle for newcomers. The show’s CGI looks dated by today’s standards. There are also too many lengthy monologues. The result is an incredible show with occasionally awkward scenes that test your patience.

‘Star Trek: The Original Series’ (1966 – 1969)

Bold Ideas Get Lost Behind Stiff Performances and Painted Backdrops

Why It’s Considered a Classic: Gene Roddenberry’s original Star Trek imagines a future in which humanity has moved beyond many of its divisions and ventured into space to explore unfamiliar worlds. William Shatner’s Captain James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy’s Spock, and the rest of the Enterprise crew became so iconic that they’re popular even 60 years later. Underneath its space adventures, the series also tackled racism, war, prejudice, and political extremism through science fiction allegories.

Why It’s Unwatchable Today: Star Trek: The Original Series influenced television enormously, and its idealistic vision continues to shape the Star Trek franchise with countless other shows. However, the limited budget is evident in the painted backdrops, flat lighting, recycled props, and rubber-suited aliens like the Gorn. The gender politics are also dated. Kirk romances a new woman every week, and female officers wear miniskirt uniforms. In Season 3, Episode 24, “Turnabout Intruder,” Janice Lester insists Starfleet will never let a woman command a starship, and the series portrays her as vengeful and unstable.

‘Battlestar Galactica’ (1978 – 1979)

An Ambitious Space Adventure That Struggles to Escape Its ’70s Roots

A scene from the original Battlestar Galactica series ABC

Why It’s Considered a Classic: Before the acclaimed 2004 reboot of Battlestar Galactica, the original series introduced a fleet of human survivors fleeing the genocidal Cylons in search of Earth. Led by Commander Adama, the survivors travel through space while battling enemies. The series brought cinematic ambition to weekly television, with large-scale battles and a sweeping premise. Its characters are still memorable, and several modern space operas draw inspiration from the series.

Why It’s Unwatchable Today: The original TV show feels like an imitation of the space-opera spectacle that dominated theaters in the wake of Star Wars. While the dogfights felt thrilling in 1978, the series keeps recycling its best battle scenes, so they start to look like reruns. The dialogue can be overly earnest, and some conflicts follow predictable patterns. Its lighter tone also limits the dramatic weight of a story about the near-extinction of humanity.

‘Doctor Who’ (1963 – 1989)

It Has Uneven Production Values and Uncomfortable Stereotypes

Why It’s Considered a Classic: Doctor Who is one of the longest-running sci-fi series in TV history. Even in its classic era, Doctor Who told the same story. It followed the mysterious Doctor, a time-traveling alien who explores different eras and planets in the TARDIS, often accompanied by human companions. The inventive monsters and serial storytelling established a blueprint for sci-fi series that could also include horror, comedy, and social commentary.

Why It’s Unwatchable Today: Calling the entire classic run of Doctor Who unwatchable is unfair, as many stories are still remarkable. However, the BBC’s tight budgets left the show with humble sets, conspicuous costumes, primitive visual tricks, and monsters that look like people wearing cheap suits. The older serialized format is pioneering, but it’s another obstacle. Some stories stretch a simple idea across multiple episodes and recap the same information.

‘Space: 1999’ (1975 – 1977)

A Visually Ambitious Series With Wooden Acting and Shaky Science

Why It’s Considered a Classic: Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, Space: 1999 follows the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha after a catastrophic nuclear explosion sends the Moon hurtling out of Earth’s orbit. Stranded in deep space, the crew encounters dangerous cosmic phenomena and mysteries that challenge their understanding of the universe. Space: 1999 was the most expensive series in British history by that point (via The Telegraph). The scope is visible in its detailed spacecraft models, atmospheric production design, and ambitious practical effects.

Why It’s Unwatchable Today: The moody and philosophical tone still deserves praise. However, the premise asks you to believe that a nuclear explosion flings the Moon across interstellar space and that it needs a new alien world every week. The science falls apart fast, and the protagonists deliver their lines in a flat, wooden manner. Season 2 brought in producer Fred Freiberger, who lightened the mood. But that tonal whiplash only makes the series feel less coherent.

‘Buck Rogers in the 25th Century’ (1979 – 1981)

Disco-Era Camp With Questionable Ideas About Its Female Characters

Gil Gerard and Juanin Clay in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
Gil Gerard and Juanin Clay in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
NBC

Why It’s Considered a Classic: Buck Rogers debuted as a comic strip in 1929. When the revival premiered 50 years later, it carried decades of sci-fi heritage with it. Universal released the pilot of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century in theaters, where it grossed $21 million, and NBC turned it into a weekly series. The show’s colorful costumes, memorable theme music, and playful attitude gave it a distinctive identity during the sci-fi boom of the late 1970s.

Why It’s Unwatchable Today: The series has an unabashedly campy tone, along with a devoted cult following. However, the episode titles alone, such as Season 1, Episode 4, “Planet of the Slave Girls,” Season 1, Episode 10, “Planet of the Amazon Women,” and Season 1, Episode 5, “Vegas in Space,” show how the writers approached the 25th century. The show emphasizes revealing outfits and romantic teasing instead of character development. Even the humor isn’t tonally consistent.

‘Blake’s 7’ (1978 – 1981)

Grim Political Sci-Fi Trapped Inside a Very Small Production

A scene from the British sci-fi series, Blake’s 7 BBC

Why It’s Considered a Classic: Blake’s 7 is much darker than most sci-fi TV shows of the decade. It follows a group of fugitives fighting the authoritarian Terran Federation. Led initially by political dissident Roj Blake, the crew of the Liberator includes criminals, rebels, and flawed individuals whose competing ambitions complicate their struggle against oppression. Created by Terry Nation, the series explored surveillance, propaganda, and resistance.

Why It’s Unwatchable Today: Blake’s 7 explores some genuinely sharp ideas. However, the gap between its ambition and resources reflects the BBC’s modest budget. With about £60,000 per episode, there was little room for effects, and the model work looks tiny next to Star Wars, which debuted in the same time period. The set has flimsy walls that literally shake during fight scenes. Even the dialogue feels stiff and overly explanatory, particularly when characters discuss elaborate political schemes.

‘Lost in Space’ (1965 – 1968)

A Promising Survival Adventure That Descends Into Camp

June Lockhart in Lost in Space CBS

Why It’s Considered a Classic: Lost in Space features an interesting premise about the Robinson family, traveling on the Jupiter 2 on a mission to colonize a distant planet. They’re stranded after the sabotage of their spacecraft sends them off course. The black-and-white first season leaned into scientific exploration and survival drama. That gives the series a foundation that distinguishes it from lighter family-friendly entertainment.

Why It’s Unwatchable Today: After Season 1, the show switched to color and became more campy. Season 3, Episode 23, “The Great Vegetable Rebellion,” features a giant carrot. In several other episodes, zipper-back monsters, silly costumes, and repetitive plots are the norm. As the series progressed, Dr. Smith’s antics and the Robot’s comic outbursts became central attractions, pushing the Robinson family’s survival struggles into the background. The Netflix reboot of Lost in Space is much better.
