Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Allen, an Australian live-action feature from the Brisbane-based Ludo Studio. Notably, Ludo Studio gained widespread recognition for the children’s animated series Bluey.
How Ludo Studio’s Allen turns a childhood friendship into an alien mystery
The official trailer for Allen underscores what audiences can expect when the movie debuts globally on Netflix. There seem to be some parallels between Allen and Steven Spielberg’s 1982 sci-fi film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, exploring the concept of what if the titular alien comes back and reunites with its human friend.
In the Netflix feature, the eponymous Allen is the alien in question, who reunites with Petey, a Queensland man. The logline for the movie reads, “20 years after his encounter with an alien, Petey never moved on. Now his old friend has returned, and the reason why is complicated — and unexpected.”
In the trailer, Petey’s life hasn’t turned out the way he expected it to be. He always seems to think about the extraordinary and extraterrestrial encounter from his childhood and even regards it as “the best thing” ever happened to him. He often sends out messages into space, hoping Allen would hear and return.
Then, as the trailer shows, Allen does come back. As ecstatic as Petey becomes afterward, he soon discovers Allen’s return might have an ulterior motive. At one point in the trailer, the alien notes remorsefully, “Allen ruin Peedee’s life.”
Director Daley Pearson has previously worked on The Strange Calls, The Strange Chores, and Bluey, created Allen. Pearson helmed the feature with Jeffrey Walker (The Artful Dodger) and penned the screenplay with Sophie Miller (Thou Shalt Not Steal).
Additionally, the movie stars T.J. Power as Petey. The cast also includes Charlotte Nicdao, Benedict Hardie, Kaipo Heke, Chaydon Jay, Josh Helman, Emily Barclay, and Danny Kim.
Allen debuts on Netflix on November 12, 2026.
