Warner Bros. Pictures is officially moving forward with a reboot of the 1990s adventure movie Free Willy. Anthony and Joe Russo’s AGBO Pictures is producing. Mary-Margaret Kunze and Jade Halley Bartlett are writing the screenplay.
The original Free Willy debuted in 1993. The family movie’s plot saw an orphaned boy connecting with a captive orca. It became a global hit, earning $153.7 million off of a $20 million budget. The movie is also credited with changing public opinion about orcas, sometimes referred to as “killer whales,” and galvanizing activism on the species’ behalf.
