Whoopi Goldberg told The Odyssey director Christopher Nolan and stars Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway that the film exposes “the stupidity of men.” The EGOT-winning actress shared her candid take during a Monday morning interview on The View. She noted the epic resonated with the current social climate.
“Men are told in this movie, ‘Don’t do this because this is going to happen.’ Every time, they go and do that, and they’re surprised that it’s going the other way!” Goldberg said. The 70-year-old also pointed to the film’s depiction of large-scale human conflict. She drew parallels between those war sequences and ongoing global struggles.
“We have to be reminded why war doesn’t really work for anybody. No one wins in a war. There are no winners, and I got that,” she added. Goldberg then shifted her focus to Hathaway, who portrays Penelope in the adaptation of Homer’s ancient poem. She celebrated the character’s resilience and intelligence across the story.
“Women forget that they are insanely strong and they are clever, because Penelope fools these men for 20 years,” Goldberg told Hathaway. In related news, The Odyssey shattered box office records following its Friday premiere. The film earned $264 million worldwide, making it Nolan’s biggest opening in unadjusted figures.
That total eclipsed the $249 million global haul The Dark Knight Rises collected back in 2012. Still, adjusted for inflation, the latter’s earnings climb to $366.9 million in 2026 dollars. The epic has also generated significant Oscar speculation ahead of the 2027 ceremony. Industry observers expect multiple nominations, building on the momentum of Nolan’s Best Picture winner Oppenheimer.
The View airs weekdays on ABC, and The Odyssey is currently showing in theaters nationwide.
