Insomniac Games would have fans believe that the villain of the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine game is Bolivar Trask. The anti-mutant scientist’s name has been all over trailers ahead of the game’s release, but a twist may be brewing. Ahead of the game’s big San Diego Comic-Con panel this week, a prequel comic for the game has introduced one of the X-Men’s greatest villains.
SDCC 2026 prequel comic Marvel’s Wolverine #1 was released on Wednesday and is written by the game’s narrative director, Walt Williams. It sees Wolverine leading Team X (consisting of Sabretooth, Mystique, and Sunfire) on a mission to infiltrate a Trask facility. Before embarking on what Wolverine suspects is a trap, he makes a call to the true leader of Team X: Nathaniel Essex. The comic then shows the man in question at The Essex Institute, located in Canada, explaining that even if it is a trap, it is time for Team X to strike back against Trask with full force.
Comic fans will perk up at the mention of Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister. Since his introduction, Sinister has become one of the X-Men’s greatest villains. He is a scientist turned mutant by Apocalypse, and has an obsession with collecting and testing mutant DNA, particularly that of the Summers extended family. While Insomniac is taking liberties with the X-Men universe, it is hard to believe that Sinister will be anything other than a villain, despite how he appears in the prequel comic. Characters in charge of clandestine mutant teams with bases in Canada don’t exactly have a reputation for doing good. The Essex Institute may be Insomniac’s version of the Weapon X program, where Wolverine was given his adamantium during experiments.
For those tuned in to Marvel’s Wolverine news, you may be aware that the game suffered substantial leaks. Without going into detail on what these leaks revealed, one tidbit relevant to the prequel comic was the mention of Mister Sinister. Insomniac has previously misdirected fans about the major villain of its games. Marvel’s Spider-Man was marketed with Mister Negative as the main antagonist, only for the game to reveal Doctor Octopus as the primary villain. It is likely the studio is doing something similar in the lead-up to Marvel’s Wolverine. Trask will surely be a threat, as will other previously revealed villains like Omega Red, but it makes sense for Mister Sinister to make his presence known later in the game. PlayStation will host the Deep Cuts: Marvel’s Wolverine panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con later today, July 23, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. PDT. Marvel’s Wolverine is set to be released on Sept. 15, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
