Spider-Man: Brand New Day actor Tom Holland has revealed a funny BTS story. It’s about the iconic Spider-Man suit. The actor mused on what it was like to live inside the iconic costume, joking that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield had it much easier than he did. He also discussed how the suit has evolved over the years.
Tom Holland makes new comparisons with past heroes
During a conversation with IMDb alongside Zendaya, Holland was asked what the hardest part about wearing the Spider-Man suit for up to 12 hours a day was. Without any hesitation, he said it was the smell after long days of shooting intense action scenes.
Tom Holland said, “The worst thing is definitely the smell. You know, like, I’m not going to shy away from it. You know, you spend 12 hours in that thing in a deep lunge, jumping up and down all day. That stinks.”
The actor also said the costume team took a fresh approach while designing the new suit for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. During pre-production, he tried on suits worn by all three live-action Spider-Men to find out which one was best.
He added, “We were really lucky with the costume department we had on this movie. We did a really interesting exercise when we were in pre-production, where I tried on Tobey’s suit, I tried on Andrew’s suit, and I tried on my original suits. And we sat down with the producers, with Destin, and the costume department, and we spoke about the things that we all loved about the previous kind of works of art that were those original suits.”
The new design pays tribute to the earlier Spider-Man movies, especially since Holland’s Peter Parker, Maguire, and Garfield teamed up in No Way Home.
Holland then explained how his predecessors had a huge advantage while wearing the suit. He said, “Andrew and Tobey, they had it way easier than I had it. They had zips in different places. They could use the bathroom. They could take their mask off by themselves. Take their gloves off… For the fourth iteration of this character, it was the first time I could comfortably go to the bathroom.”
Maguire was the sole Spider-Man from 2002 to 2007. This was followed by Garfield, who played the superhero between 2012 and 2014. Holland has been the MCU’s Peter Parker since 2016.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is Holland’s fourth standalone MCU film. It’s set four years after ‘No Way Home’, and reunites with Zendaya as Mary Jane Watson, with Jacob Batalon and Mark Ruffalo returning to the franchise. Jon Bernthal joins the cast as the Punisher, while Sadie Sink also has a significant role in the film.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will hit theaters worldwide on July 31, 2026.
