Brand new Tomb Raider adventure game Catalyst has been quietly delayed to 2028.
Catalyst was one of two Tomb Raider projects announced at The Game Awards last December. At the time, game developers Crystal Dynamics planned to release their remake of original Lara Croft adventure at some point in 2026 with brand new story Catalyst following in 2027. Both games will feature acclaimed actress Alix Wilton Regan as Lara Croft.
“With Tomb Raider: Catalyst, we’re crafting our most expansive and innovative Tomb Raider adventure yet, while Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis allows us to revisit where it all began through a modern lens,” said Crystal Dynamics boss Scot Amos.
However last month, Crystal Dynamics confirmed that the Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis remake will be pushed back to February 12 2027, with no reason for the delay given.
It’s now been announced that the release date for Catalyst has also been pushed back. Speaking to The Game Business, Amazon head of gaming Jeffrey Gattis said: “We’ve obviously announced the two Tomb Raider titles: Atlantis comes 12th February next year and then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one.” Again, no reason for the delay has been confirmed.
“Tomb Raider: Catalyst marks a bold direction for the series as Lara Croft embarks on a new adventure across Northern India. Tomb Raider: Catalyst is set in the wake of a mythical cataclysm that has unleashed ancient secrets and awakened the mysterious forces that guard them,” reads a description of the game. “When the most notorious treasure hunters from around the world descend on the region, Lara races to uncover the truth buried beneath the fractured landscape and stop those who would use its power for their own gain. As the ancient world collides with the present, Lara must decide who to trust among rivals and allies to prevent a catastrophe and protect a secret that could reshape the future.”
A live-action adaptation of Tomb Raider is also currently in the works at Amazon Prime Video. Sophie Turner, who’ll play Lara Croft, recently said she expects to be busy with the show for the next few years. She also promised her take on the iconic character won’t be a “sex bombshell”. Instead, the adaptation is “about her story and what drives her, rather than what so many people also love about her, which is how hot she is in the games and the movies. I really want to show the other side. She’s so unashamedly capable. She is not a woman who hides her strengths at all.”
In other news, the team behind God Of War have confirmed that new spin-off game Laufey will launch next year, followed by a sequel starring Kratos.
