When Charles M. Schulz first began working on Peanuts, he had no way to know just how iconic the franchise would become. Charlie Brown, Linus, and Snoopy have become world-renowned faces with settled personalities and fascinating running gags. Every arc made for a piece of history that would further define what makes this strip so great.
Unfortunately, not every character can be as timeless as Snoopy. The strip began on October 2, 1950, and ended on February 13, 2000, after Schulz’s death. Having endured for so long, it was inevitable that many of its characters would come and go through the years. Some, unfortunately, gently faded out of the comic completely. These Peanuts characters may be gone, but they’re not forgotten wholly by fans who have avidly spent time getting to know them on a personal level.
Charlie Brown’s Pencil-Pal Had Scattered Mentions
Charlie Brown often tried to make whatever friends he could. Unfortunately, he was always destined to feel a sense of isolation. Even his Pencil-Pal was phased out of the comic after a decade or two of prominence. Though Charlie Brown initially wrote to her often, it could never last.

The Pencil-Pal was a girl in Scotland named Morag, who had a collection of pen-pals she enjoyed writing to. Charlie Brown often considered her his only friend, but that was a significant issue. Peanuts relies on some dark concepts, including its loneliness, to keep its narrative moving. Unfortunately, that meant that a loyal Pencil-Pal was too much. The Pencil-Pal was prominent in early issues, but she was later included only in fleeting references in later years. Despite a resurgence in the ’90s, she faded yet again before the run ended.
Charlotte Braun Was an Abrasive Person
When Peanuts first began, Charlie Brown was its undisputed star. Snoopy was an adorable little beagle who could not yet speak, walk, or pilot an imaginary plane. In those early days, Charlie Brown was the strip’s leading man, so it was only natural that Schulz would attempt to introduce his foil: Charlotte Braun.

Charlotte was a loud, abrasive, and poorly developed character who did not serve the strip well. Her boisterous personality, which was entirely at odds with Charlie Brown’s, made her a pariah. Readers rejected her, and Schulz took the advice of a reader’s letter by axing the character — quite literally. After drawing a cartoon of Charlotte with an ax in her skull, Schulz let Charlotte fade into the background of Peanuts‘ lore.
Eudora Was Dropped After Just Nine Years
Eudora, who could often be seen tagging along with Sally, was a relatively short-lived Peanuts character. When she debuted, she was fairly prominent, quickly rising to the ranks of Peanuts‘ main characters. Unfortunately, after exactly nine years, Schulz retired the character. She did not appear again after June 13, 1987.

While she offered a chance to provide more insight into Sally’s character, Sally quickly found niches of her own to explore. Her new philosophies and relationships opened avenues that simply didn’t need Eudora there. She was slowly removed from the strip after falling into a more supportive role.
José Never Lasted Long
José Peterson has always been an underrated member of the Peanuts cast. Known for being half-Swedish and half-Mexican, he was also a baseball star. José never actually spoke in the strip, though he did have more of a presence in various specials. Still, he was an interesting character who showed how seriously the kids took baseball.

Schulz never found much to do with José, however. The character came to him in a dream and left just as quickly. Before even reading 10 appearances, Schulz gave up on the arc and let José fall into the realm of obscurity. The character never returned.
Patty Was the First Female Character
Long before Peppermint Patty became a face of the franchise, another Patty was extremely prominent. Patty debuted on October 2, 1950, becoming the first girl to appear in Peanuts. As such, Patty’s appearances alongside other short-lived characters dominated the first decade of the strip’s run.

Later in the run, however, the cast outright ballooned. Patty still enjoyed scattered appearances throughout the run, but she was fully phased out of having any major role in the arcs. The rise of characters like Sally and Lucy left no room for Patty, who faded away and made her last appearance in 1997.
Frieda Was Nothing But a Haircut
Frieda was a fairly original Peanuts character who was well known for her naturally curly hair. She was so well known for it that Schulz found it difficult to do anything with her. The character did nothing but discuss her curly hair, and her obsession with it left room for nothing else.

The character, who often managed to insert a conversation about her hair into every conversation, was a challenge whenever Schulz needed to diversify the strip. Frustrated by her lack of personality, Schulz wrote Frieda out of his world. After November 22, 1985, she was never seen again outside specials.
Shermy Was Charlie Brown’s Closest Friend
Though admittedly, he did not like Charlie Brown much, Shermy began his tenure as one of Charlie Brown’s closest friends. For the first few years, he would often be seen playing with Charlie Brown or the girls. Shermy was even Snoopy’s original owner, making him an extremely important character.

Within five years, however, Shermy lost his place in the strip. His character lacked any clear traits to distinguish him from other cast members. The bland personality certainly didn’t help. His haircut, introduced on April 18, 1953, was also difficult for Schulz to draw consistently. Dissatisfied with his development, Schulz elected to decrease his appearances. His last cameo came on November 9, 1975, and he has not been seen in a newspaper since.
Violet Gray Was Replaced by Lucy
Alongside Patty and Shermy, Violet Gray stood out in Peanuts‘ earliest issues. She suffered from a short temper and had various interests that made her a compelling character. She loved mud pies, playing baseball, and telling Charlie Brown to leave her house. Unfortunately, her time as a star was never going to last.

Because Lucy proved to be a lasting hit, Schulz needed to differentiate their designs. After all, the two were surprisingly similar and were largely only distinguishable by considering Lucy’s unique eyes. With new characters, like Sally and Peppermint Patty, coming into the picture, Schulz elected to let Violet fade into obscurity. There were already enough characters who needed attention. Violet, who was similar to Lucy in looks and personality, had to go.
Schulz Ran Out of Pig-Pen Ideas
Pig-Pen was introduced surprisingly early in the strip’s run. He debuted on July 13, 1954, as an extremely unhygienic boy with a penchant for lathering himself with dust and dirt. Even after a bath, simply stepping outside would turn him into a veritable cloud of dust. It was a fun concept, but it did not go especially far.

Schulz quickly ran through every available idea for the character in short succession. After a time, a boy covered in dirt became less original and demonstrably less funny. The character still appeared in a supporting rolebutwas often relegated to mere cameos. Pig-Pen’s time as a leading man was short and sweet, though it certainly was not especially hygienic.
Lucy’s Mom Originally Spoke
Lucy’s mother played a significant role in the early years of Peanuts. Linus and Lucy often fought over blocks and other toys, so she regularly stepped in to stop Lucy from bullying her little brother. Considering how chaotic a child like Lucy can be, parental involvement was undoubtedly necessary. Unfortunately, it also spat in the face of later perceptions of Peanuts.
Mrs. van Pelt never appeared on a panel, but she did speak throughout the 1950s.
Today, the strip is remembered for the lack of any adult involvement at all. Adult voices are muffled and garbled, making them unimportant presences in the lives of the children. To ensure the tone was consistent, Schulz completely phased Mrs. Van Pelt’s dialogue out of the strip. She was still present, but she would not receive any text bubbles in later appearances.
