Amazon MGM Studios gained full creative control of the James Bond franchise in a deal finalized in February 2025, following Amazon’s initial acquisition of Bond’s parent company, MGM, which closed in 2022. This shift triggered a massive structural and creative reboot of the long-running spy saga, with the studio looking to completely reinvent 007 for a new era. Hollywood veterans Amy Pascal and David Heyman have taken over the producing reins, while Denis Villeneuve is officially attached to direct the next installment from a script penned by Steven Knight, who is said to be crafting a darker, more grounded story for James Bond 26.
Auditions for the next James Bond are currently underway, spearheaded by legendary casting director Nina Gold, known for her work on Game of Thrones and The Crown. Amazon MGM Studios formally confirmed that the talent search to find Daniel Craig’s successor to lead Bond 26 kicked off in May, with the production team reportedly seeking a fresh face in their 30s to commit to a multi-film run as the iconic 007 agent that could potentially span the next decade. While no actor has been officially announced for the role, there is a clear frontrunner, but it seems that fans will have to wait a little longer to discover who has secured the gig.
Amazon MGM Studios chief Mike Hopkins has, however, provided the first official update on the status of Bond 26 since casting began. Speaking on Variety‘s Strictly Business podcast, Hopkins outlined Amazon’s plans for James Bond’s “new chapter,” confirming that the studio is still in the early stages of development on the reboot. He emphasized that the primary goal after gaining full creative control of the franchise was to recruit a top-tier team of talent to work on the next 007 entry, while also trying to figure out how to make the franchise “relevant” for a modern audience amid the current streaming era. He candidly revealed:
“The first step was, ‘Let’s hire the best people in the world to bring this new story to life, this new chapter in the Bond franchise. So, between Denis and Amy, David Heyman and Steven Knight writing the script, we feel like we’ve got a world-class storytelling team there working with us. The second thing is, we are gonna try and figure out how does James Bond get into the next chapter and then be relevant for customers for a long period of time. And so, there was still a lot of work to do. We’re sort of in the bottom half of the first inning of bringing this to life.”
Despite being a tech and streaming giant, with Prime Video as an offshoot of the parent studio, Hopkins reassured fans of the franchise that Amazon remains fully committed to theatrical releases and, as a result, he expects Bond 26 to debut on the big screen when it is finally ready for audiences’ eyes. He explicitly dismissed concerns regarding a direct-to-streaming release for the next 007 entry, saying, “We’ve made a big investment in theatrical. I would be shocked if that were any different with James Bond in the future.”
Since Amazon is taking its time to carefully plot out the much-discussed Bond reboot, production is not expected to start until next year – at the earliest. There is no official release date for the movie as yet, but because Villeneuve must finish his production and press obligations for Dune: Messiah (which is scheduled to open in theaters this December), it is likely that principal photography for Bond 26 will only begin in 2027. Consequently, a theatrical release in late 2028 or 2029 is presumed to be the target for next 007 film.
