Anthony Hopkins won an Academy Award for his murderous role in The Silence of the Lambs, and it’s a performance that is remembered more often than the actor’s previous horror flick. He also starred in 1978’s Magic, and nearly five decades later, the cult classic film is back in the spotlight with an all-new physical release.
Shout! Studios and Scream Factory have unveiled a new release for Magic as part of a limited 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook. It includes a new 4K restoration of the late-seventies film using the original camera negative. Multiple new commentary tracks from critics have also been recorded, allowing viewers to get more insight into Magic than ever before. The Steelbook is available to pre-order from some retailers, and it is officially set to be released on Dec. 29, 2026.

Magic Has Gotten a New 4K Remaster
The official synopsis for Magic reads, “Corky (Anthony Hopkins), a failed magician, adopts a new ventriloquist act with an abrasive dummy named Fats, and suddenly finds himself lined up for a television show. When the unbalanced Corky fears he won’t pass the required mental exam, he runs away with Fats to his hometown, where he meets an old love from high school, Peggy (Ann-Margret). Corky persuades Peggy to leave her loveless marriage — but Fats, who seems to be taking on a mind of his own, doesn’t approve of the relationship.”
Richard Attenborough directed the movie. Based on the 1976 novel of the same name, it was written by William Goldman. Other stars of the film include Burgess Meredith and Ed Lauter.
Magic getting a new release comes ahead of a new adaptation of the story. It was reported earlier this year that Sam Raimi will direct his own version of Magic for Lionsgate. This has been described as a modern adaptation of the original novel and won’t necessarily be a remake of the Hopkins-led movie. No cast members have been announced and there is not yet a release date set.
The Magic 4K UHD Steelbook and Blu-ray set will be released on Dec. 29, 2026.
