Disney’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event just wrapped up in Anaheim, CA, and the announcements made there were wildly exciting, to say the least. From X-Men castings to trailers for the next Kingdom Hearts game, Disney truly hit every corner of its fandom in one amazing weekend. Of course, time was also spent discussing Disney and Pixar film projects that are debuting soon, and announcing new ones.
Over the next four years, Pixar has quite a collection of films on its slate, some of which are firsts of their kind for the studio. Not only will it be dipping its toes into creating more music-focused stories, but it may also be exploring the world of horror — at a very basic level — to bring some spooky fun to 2028. Outside the original stories, which are my personal favorites, a handful of sequels can also be expected from Pixar in the coming years, which will likely make a variety of longtime fans very happy.

Originally announced in 2022, Gatto is a visually beautiful film that’s been a long time coming. It tells the story of a scrappy stray cat named Nero who lives on the streets of Venice, Italy, and spends his time being a lackey for the notorious feline mob boss, Rocco. Eventually, Nero begins to wonder if the life of crime that he’s led for so long is really for him, or if there’s more out there that he’s missing out on. In the search for his purpose, he makes an unlikely friendship that may be just what he’s looking for.
If you’re a fan of Luca like I am, you’re in luck, as the creative team behind Gatto is the same one that brought that beautiful story to life.

A short teaser for Ghost Market was shown at D23 this year, which showcased a young boy filming himself as he walks down a dark street and talks to the camera. As he walks, he offers a brief and vague explanation of the movie’s plot, but is interrupted and chased away by what he calls “a hungry ghost.”
“So it’s basically a movie about hungry ghosts. [A] lot of crazy stuff happens. It’s good, you’ll like it. So, it’s not like some of those … some of those other scary movies where you’re like ‘Well, gonna have nightmares about that for the rest of my life.’ Oh no, it’s back! Uh, in theaters coming 2028!”
Though neither director of this film has a large directing credit under their belt, Trevor Jimenez has worked at Pixar as an animator for years, working on the creative team for films like Soul and Finding Dory. Jesse Andrews has many large writing credits to his name, serving as a writer for Hoppers, Elio, and Luca, and also the author of the best-selling book Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl, along with the movie of the same name. Based on the short teaser and the credits of those involved, I’m sure this movie will be a fun time.

During a quick sneak peek, also at this year’s D23, concept art for Incredibles 3 was shown, and a small amount of the plot was discussed. With the original film, The Incredibles, following Mr. Incredible, and Incredibles 2 primarily following Mrs. Incredible, it would only make sense for Incredibles 3 to follow the three kids, Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack, which is exactly what this film will be doing.
With superheroes legal again in the world of the Incredibles, there’s bound to be at least a few bad apples walking amongst the population of people with superpowers, which is a scary thought, especially when one of these bad apples has their sights set on the Parr family. It’s revealed that the family will be dealing with their first real supervillain in Incredibles 3; one that’s more powerful than all of them combined.
Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing this movie for a couple of years, but I can’t wait. The director of this film, Peter Sohn, wrote and directed Elemental, which I really enjoyed, so I’m excited to see how he uses and develops the Parr family.

Similar to Incredibles 3, Coco 2 was discussed very briefly at this year’s D23. To discuss the sneak peek, actor Benjamin Bratt, who’s returning to Coco 2 to reprise his role as Ernesto de la Cruz, took to the stage. So far, we know that Coco 2 will be taking place a couple of years after the events of the first film, which means Miguel will be growing up and looking a bit older, and that the prior villain, Cruz, is back for revenge. Miguel will have to rely on his ancestors for help once more as he’s transported back to the land of the dead to stop Cruz once and for all.
Not much else is known about this film — besides the original director returning, which is great to see — and it’s not slated to debut for three more years, which means we’ll be waiting quite a while to see it. On the bright side, though, that means we’ll have plenty of time to learn more details about what Pixar has up their sleeve.

Though nothing was said about a new Monsters, Inc. film at D23, it was confirmed earlier this year to officially be in the works. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal in March, Pixar’s CCO Pete Docter, who also happens to be the director and writer of the original Monsters, Inc. film, along with the executive producer of Monsters University, gave a very vague but promising assurance that we will be seeing more of the Monsters, Inc. world in the future.
At this time, no information is known regarding who the director of the next film will be, who will be returning, or what the plot will focus on, which is a bit disappointing, but also exciting. Will this film also be a prequel to the original like Monsters University is, or will it pick up where we left off in 2001, with Sully reconnecting with Boo? We’ll have to wait and see.

In the same article with The Wall Street Journal, Docter also teased that Pixar will be debuting an original musical in the coming years, which is set to be directed by Domee Shi, the director of Turning Red. Similar to the new Monsters, Inc. film, close to nothing is known about this upcoming musical as it’s being kept very under wraps.
This film would be Pixar’s first-ever musical — which you may find surprising considering how synonymous music numbers are with animated movies, especially those from Pixar’s parent studio, Walt Disney Studios — and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
With four movies to look forward to in the next three years, and two more likely beyond that, I’m pleasantly surprised by Pixar’s projected creative path at the moment. Of these movies, which are you most looking forward to? Let me know in the comments below.
