The Final Fantasy franchise is best known for many things: its characters, world building, art design, music, and much more. As for 1997’s Final Fantasy VII, it is no exception. Marking the seventh main installment in the Square Enix RPG franchise, Final Fantasy VII is considered one of the best as it follows Cloud Strife and his allies who must stop a world-controlling megacorporation. However, when their journey sees them in pursuit of superhuman, Sephiroth, they soon realize that the threat is much bigger than they had first thought.
Now, in recent years, Square Enix has treated fans to the Final Fantasy VII Remake, which currently consists of the first game, and its second, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Now, with the third and final entry, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, expected to launch some time next year.
However, before then, Final Fantasy fans have something else to look forward to thanks to one December release. Final Fantasy: Heroes Of Midgar is the debut album of the Eikon String Quartet, with the album aiming to highlight the character themes of Final Fantasy VII.
The Eikon String Quartet was formed back in 2004 to perform at Mystic Worlds: Classic Video Game Music for String Quartet, as part of the Nashville Symphony Chamber Music series.
Consisting of members Lucia Nowik (violin), Francesca Bass (violin), Anthony Parce (viola) and Andrew Dunn (cello, arranger), the quartet performed multiple pieces from Final Fantasy VII at Mystic Worlds, including the Main Theme of FINAL FANTASY VII, Descendent of Shinobi (Yuffie’s Theme), Barret’s Theme (Bitter Memories), Tifa’s Theme, and Adventure’s End (Aerith’s Theme). As such, it was a hit performance, with tickets selling out months before the concert took place.
Now, the Eikon String Quartet has transformed their concert performance into an album which, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, can now be purchased worldwide.
Including an expanded list of character themes from Final Fantasy VII, players can expect some familiar pieces such as “Red XIII’s Theme, Cid’s Theme, The Nightmare Begins (Vincent’s Theme), Cait Sith’s Theme, River of Lights (another gorgeous version of Aerith’s Theme) and End of the World. We’ll also will include a new version of the FFVII prelude for string quartet and piano.”
Luckily, we can hear the Main Theme courtesy of a YouTube video recorded by the Eikon String Quartet to get just a glimpse at the quality and talent we can expect from the finished product. Not only that, but with the album set to be shipped out to supporters in December 2026, there is not long to go until we can experience the stunning soundtrack of Final Fantasy VII from the comfort of our own homes.
