As per The Hollywood Reporter, Martin will accept the award at the Audrey Irmas Pavilion, where the festival will also screen Heirs of the Perisphere. The science-fiction short recently premiered at the Santa Fe International Film Festival. It is based on a story by Martin’s longtime friend, author Howard Waldrop.
Directed by Chris Eyre and written by Caroline Spector, the film follows three animatronic robots. After centuries, the robots awaken to discover that humanity has disappeared. They subsequently set out on a journey to find their creators. Martin is also expected to participate in a conversation with festival attendees, with further details to be announced.
According to festival organizers, the Monolith Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals whose work has made a lasting impact on entertainment. This year’s recognition celebrates Martin’s storytelling career and his efforts to bring Waldrop’s work to the screen. He joins Oscar-winning filmmaker Brad Bird as a recipient of the honor.
“George R.R. Martin has had an extraordinary impact on storytelling, creating worlds and characters that have captivated audiences for generations,” said Infinity Festival co-founder Mark Lieber. He also expressed excitement about showcasing Heirs of the Perisphere alongside the festival’s animation programming.
