One of the stars of Hoppers just revealed his idea for a sequel to the hit Pixar movie.
Hoppers marked a major milestone for Pixar when it was released in theaters this March, as it was the animation studio’s 30th feature film. While original stories at Pixar haven’t fared as well in recent years, Hoppers bucked the trend, grossing $372 million at the box office and earning overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics.
After that success, the discussion has turned to whether Pixar will greenlight a sequel, as it has done for several of its other films. In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan for Hoppers‘ home release, cast member Bobby Moynihan, who voices the character King George, admitted he already has an idea.
While he’s not sure if it’s a good or bad story pitch, the former SNL star believes that a Hoppers sequel should do the opposite of what the first film did.
In other words, whereas Hoppers shows college student Mabel transporting her mind into a robotic beaver, Hoppers 2 should have George “hop into a human body, because Mabel is running for mayor against Mayor Jerry, and he’s going to be her campaign manager,” explained Moynihan.
Piper Curda, who voices Mabel Tanaka, exclaimed that she’s “on board” with that storyline and would absolutely come back for a Hoppers sequel. “The adventures of Mabel and George, just them getting into antics, I think that’s rife with material,” she added.
If that idea doesn’t work, Moynihan thinks there should be a Disney+ series called Pond Rules or a Fast & Furious-type project where the characters “get themed beaver cars and start racing into space.” Curda added on to that by saying a sequel could be a dark crime procedural.
Bobby Moynihan: “I just came up with this in the last 10 minutes, and I have no idea if it’s a good idea or not, but I think it’s the opposite. Mabel has to hop into a human body, or George has to hop into a human body, because Mabel is running for mayor against Mayor Jerry, and he’s going to be her campaign manager.”
Piper Curda: “Yeah, on board. I’ll do it.”
Bobby Moynihan: “I don’t know if it’ll work, but either that or I keep saying Pond Rules, just Disney+ series.”
Piper Curda: “Yeah, because the adventures of Mabel and George, just them getting into antics, I think that’s rife with material.”
Bobby Moynihan: “Or just full Fast & Furious. They each get themed beaver cars and start racing into space.”
Piper Curda: “Or it turns into a dark crime procedural.”
Bobby Moynihan: “They’re all ideas, and that’s a fact.”
Director Daniel Chong, who previously worked on the senior creative team for Pixar’s Turning Red, Lightyear, Elemental, Inside Out 2, Elio and the brand-new Toy Story 5, admitted that there’s a strong desire to reunite for a sequel to Hoppers.
However, he acknowledged that Pixar will not greenlight a movie unless there’s a story worth telling. “We’ll just see how it goes. If something rises to the top, it’d be an honor to dive back into that world,” he said.
Producer Nicole Paradis Grindle, whose producing credits include Incredibles 2, Toy Story 3 and Monsters University, echoed Chong’s comment and added that she thinks the “chances are good that we will give it a shot.” As of right now, though, “we’ve committed to nothing so far.” Grindle did admit, though, that Moynihan’s sequel idea is “not bad.”
Nicole Paradis Grindle [reacting to Moynihan’s idea]: “That’s not bad.”
Daniel Chong: “Yeah. There’s a lot of desire for a sequel. I just got back from vacation this week, so I’m coming back to work, and I think there’s a hope that we could crack one. But at Pixar, if there’s no story, we’re not going to make it. So we’ll just see how it goes. If something rises to the top, it’d be an honor to dive back into that world.”
Nicole Paradis Grindle: “I agree. It’s always been, ‘If there’s a story, we will make it.’ But there is a hunger for this world, so I think the chances are good that we will give it a shot. But we’ve committed to nothing so far.”
Pixar is no stranger to releasing sequels to its hit films. The Toy Story and Cars franchises have spun off into TV shows and multiple sequels, with the former having just released its fifth installment.
Monsters, Inc. has received a prequel and a TV series. While there hasn’t been a sequel to Up, there have been short films and a TV show.
Inside Out eventually got its own sequel (and a TV show), as did Finding Nemo with Finding Dory, which will be revisited with an upcoming short film featuring Ellen DeGeneres reprising her role as the fan-favorite regal blue tang fish.
Speaking of future projects, Pixar is currently working on a threequel to The Incredibles, which arrives in theaters in 2028, and a Coco sequel, which does not have a release date yet.
Pixar typically does not make a sequel immediately after the first film is released. As Chong and Grindle said, executives try to focus on quality over quantity, so a potential Hoppers 2 might not materialize for several years.
Until that hypothetical becomes a reality, Pixar fans can revisit Hoppers from the comfort of their homes now that the movie is available to stream on Disney+.
