This article contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 1 of House of the Dragon.
Wow, what a welcome back party that episode was for House of the Dragon. The hit spinoff of HBO Max’s Game of Thrones series flew out of the cave with a blazing hot start as it digs its claws in for Season 3, instantly making it clear to the audience that their two-year wait was justified.
The eighth and final episode of Season 2, The Queen Who Ever Was, aired in August 2024, and the cliffhanger promised an unleashing of Hell worthy of George R.R. Martin. It delivered in more than one way, one of which was in viewership, pulling in more than 20 million viewers worldwide for Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO Max.
House of the Dragon’s Season 3 Opener Sets HBO Max on Fire
“The Season 3 premiere had attracted 21.5M global viewers in the first three days across HBO and HBO Max, Warner Bros. Discovery said Thursday,” Deadline reported this week.
The catch is that while the episode absolutely cooked in both quality and number of eyeballs attracted, the latter is down a bit over what Season 2’s premiere delivered for HBO Max — though that’s not entirely abnormal — seeing as the Season 2 premiere garnered fewer views than did the series premiere in Season 1.
“That’s down about 8% from Season 2’s 23.4M viewers in three days, but it’s still a strong enough audience retention for the season debut,” the report added. “A decline was somewhat expected given that the show (as many do) also lost viewers between Seasons 1 and 2.”
Adding to the intrigue is the fact that Warner Bros. noted that Season 2 of House of the Dragon saw skyrocketing viewership ahead of the Season 3 premiere, and that definitely tracks, as newcomers attempt to play catch-up and diehards rewatch to reset the stage for Season 3.
