Bruce Springsteen released his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., in 1973, beginning a recording career that would eventually lead to one of the biggest music catalog sales in history.
Nearly five decades later, the rock legend sold his recorded music and songwriting rights to Sony Music for an estimated $500 million. The deal, announced in December 2021, earned Springsteen a Guinness World Record for the most expensive music catalog sold by a solo artist.
According to Billboard, the agreement included Springsteen’s master recordings and publishing rights, giving Sony ownership of music spanning nearly 50 years.
The catalog featured more than 300 songs across 20 studio albums, along with live recordings, compilations, box sets and other releases.
Among the most recognizable songs included in the sale were “Born to Run,” “Dancing in the Dark,” “Hungry Heart,” “Streets of Philadelphia” and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.”
The deal also included Springsteen’s 1984 album Born in the U.S.A., which sold more than 15 million copies in the United States and produced seven Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
His earlier releases helped establish his reputation as a songwriter, including 1975’s Born to Run and 1980’s The River, his first album to reach No. 1 in the United States.
The reported $500 million agreement exceeded several other high-profile catalog sales announced around the same period.
In December 2020, Bob Dylan sold his songwriting catalog to Universal Music Publishing Group for a reported $300 million.
Neil Young also sold a 50% interest in his songwriting catalog to Hipgnosis Songs Fund in January 2021 for an estimated $150 million.
Other musicians who reached agreements involving their music rights included Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Shakira, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Springsteen’s agreement stood out because it covered both his songwriting and recorded music rights.
Guinness World Records recognized the transaction following its announcement on December 15, 2021, noting that the sale encompassed work from his debut album through 2020’s Letter to You.
Before selling his catalog, Springsteen had continued releasing new material and performing live.
He released Western Stars in 2019, followed by Letter to You in 2020.
