In a world where AI “slop” and iffy CGI are running rampant, sometimes it’s refreshing to take a beat and revisit some more impactful animation and hybrid films from decades past.
Looking ahead, Dwayne Johnson is currently attached to star in a live-action/CGI hybrid movie called Lizard Music, re-teaming with his Smashing Machine director Benny Safdie. The buzzy project also just signed singer-songwriter Raye as a voice actress and music contributor, per Deadline.
But dating back nearly 40 years, perhaps the greatest hybrid effort of all time was released, with a historic end-credits sequence that ran 7 to 10 minutes long due to the massive crew involved.
The credits of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), however, did not include a certain award-winning actress who lent her voice to the movie’s sexiest hand-drawn character.
Added to that, the great Kathleen Turner was quite pregnant while recording her iconic lines for Jessica Rabbit — whose getup happens to a trending Halloween costume this weekend, by the way.
“I missed the last day because I went into labor,” she once told Yahoo! Entertainment. “I’m in the hospital saying, ‘Call the studio! Tell them I won’t be in today!'”
Turner, 72, had previously worked with Who Framed Roger Rabbit director Robert Zemeckis on Romancing the Stone (1984), and it sounds like she was happy to help with Jessica Rabbit’s voice on their 1988 collab, per a 2012 interview she gave.
“What an extraordinary feat, matching animation and live film. Nobody had done that before. That was just a remarkable process,” Turner once told The A.V. Club. “To me, it was just fun. I was just seeing what I could do with that voice… That was just too fun to pass up.”
Therefore, in terms of why Turner’s name wasn’t featured in the film’s credits, it probably didn’t have to do with any rifts behind the scenes. Turner seems to have nothing but positive things to say about the experience, and perhaps she just lent her talents as a quick favor to a filmmaker pal.
