Marvel Confirms Venom’s Son Is Back—and He’s More Powerful Than Ever

The following contains major spoilers for Venom #259, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Dylan Brock just got a stunning new look and a completely different symbiote partner to go along with it.

After a grueling encounter with the recently resurfaced villain known as FACADE in the pages of Venom #259 (by Al Ewing, Carlos Gómez, Frank D’Armata, and VC’s Clayton Cowles), Dylan Brock and Rick Jones find themselves staring down a particularly uncomfortable truth. Despite all his years spent sharing his body and mind, Rick just doesn’t seem capable of truly handling a symbiote. Fortunately, Dylan knows more about that than almost anyone else, making him the perfect choice when it comes to taking up the mantle of Toxin.

The official synopsis for Venom #259 from Marvel Comics reads, “VenoMJ GETS AN ALL-NEW LOOK! A face from Venom’s past is back from the dead — with a warning that could mean the end of the world! In the face of the apocalypse, who can Mary Jane Watson trust with her greatest secret? Not who you think! Meanwhile, Dylan Brock makes a decision… and the Venom family may never be the same! Plus, an all-new look for VenoMJ!”

Who is Toxin in Marvel Comics?

The Toxin symbiote was introduced back in 2004’s Venom Vs. Carnage #2 by Peter Milligan and Clayton Crain. Born from Carnage as the thousandth symbiote in the same genetic line, Toxin was immediately feared by both titular symbiotes, though only Carnage set out on a brutal quest to destroy it entirely.

Toxin’s first host was NYPD Officer Pat Mulligan, who was tragically murdered by Blackheart years later. In the time since, Toxin has bonded with a variety of hosts, ranging from the young Bren Waters to the Hulk’s old pal Rick Jones, the latter of whom has used his newfound powers to fight the forces of evil all over again as Captain Spider.

Although Rick Jones is more than capable of holding his own on the battlefield, there is no doubt that Dylan Brock is a better fit for Toxin as a host. Not only has most of Dylan’s life been defined by the surrounding symbiotes, but he has an innate connection to them courtesy of the literal symbiote DNA coursing through his veins.

This change of hosts for Toxin couldn’t come at a better time, as Marvel Comics is on the verge of a whole new symbiote-fueled horror story in the form of Queen in Black. Apart from bringing back Knull, the progenitor of all symbiotes who was seemingly destroyed during the events of King in Black, the upcoming event and its mainline Queen in Black limited series follow Hela along in her quest to wield Knull’s power for herself.
