The following contains major spoilers for Sorcerer Supreme #8, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
The latest addition to the Scarlet Witch’s family might just be the most miraculous one of the entire eclectic clan.
Sorcerer Supreme #8 (by Steve Orlando, Bernard Chang, Ruth Redmond, and VC’s Joe Sabino) finds Wanda Maximoff and the Quantumancer Turin Sud-Ba, the Sorcerer Supreme of the Quantum Realm, staring down the threat of both the matter-consuming Maniac Maw and the next Extinction Weapon commanded by the ancient and horrifying Extinction King. Specifically, that Extinction Weapon comes in the form of a massive, world-obliterating cannon, one that now exists as the Scarlet Witch’s latest adoptive child now that she has imbued it with both the sentience to make its own decisions and the heart to be something other than a gun.

The official solicit synopsis for Sorcerer Supreme #8 from Marvel Comics reads, “THE WEAPONS OF EXTINCTION! Wanda and TURIN — Sorcerer Supreme of the Quantum Realm – defend the Sanctum Sanctorum in London from the EXTINCTION KING’s first Extinction Weapon — a giant astral super cannon poised to destroy everything in its sights!”
While Wanda Maximoff, better known as the Scarlet Witch, has long been one of the most prominent and powerful Masters of the Mystic Arts in the entire Marvel Universe, she only recently took up the mantle of the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth. This title, usually attributed to Doctor Strange, has changed hands several times in recent years, and all for the worst of reasons.
How The Title Of Sorcerer Supreme Was Given to Wanda Maximoff
During the events of Marvel Comics’ Blood Hunt, the entire world is enveloped in supernatural darkness, paving the way for a global vampire assault. In the chaos, Doctor Strange was infected, forcing him to split his consciousness away from his physical form, in turn cutting him off from the greatest of his magics. In order to save the world, Doctor Strange passed the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme to none other than Doctor Doom, who took over as Earth’s self-imposed supreme ruler not long after staving off what would have been a gruesome end.
Of course, Doctor Doom was eventually forced to give up not just his position as the Sorcerer Supreme, but the stranglehold he had established over Earth. When Valeria Richards was killed as a result of his actions, Doom chose to sacrifice himself to bring his goddaughter back and give her the second chance at life that she so rightly deserved.
Since then, Doom’s absence has led to all kinds of troublesome circumstances, though Wanda Maximoff made certain that the lack of a Sorcerer Supreme was not one of them. Since taking on that moniker for herself, the Scarlet Witch has taken great pains to ensure that her time as Sorcerer Supreme is as successful as possible, even forming her own counsel of confidants ranging from Clea to Somnus to Amaranth, and even the dreaded Chthon.
