Matthew McConaughey addressed the ongoing speculations about him running for Texas governor in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. McConaughey appeared alongside Brothers costar Woody Harrelson.
When asked whether the show had sparked the rumors, he said, “No, no, no, that governor stuff was all real, and then we added that to the show.”
Harrelson said, “He is really thinking about running.”
Host Kevin Frazier followed up by asking whether McConaughey planned to run for governor one day. McConaughey said, “Not yet.”
Harrelson quipped, “Wouldn’t he make a great governor?” adding that “You’d love to have him as your governor. A guy who’s not selling you out; you know it’s businessmen working for bigger businessmen. There’s no one that’s going to be able to buy him, rich as he is.”
McConaughey’s latest comments came after years of speculation about whether he would enter Texas politics.
According to Ok! Magazine, rumors of McConaughey running for governor have been making the rounds since 2020. The actor cleared up the rumors in 2021, saying he would not run for governor, according to CNN.
However, McConaughey did not entirely dismiss the idea. In 2024, he told governors at the National Governors Association’s Summer Meeting in Salt Lake City that he is on a “learning tour” on whether he should participate in elections. He said, “I’m on a learning tour and have been, probably, for the last six years.”
His recent remarks highlighted how his real-life experiences with political rumors influenced his portrayal in the new series. The series is based on two best friends whose lives change when a family secret reveals they might be brothers.
