Matthew Perry‘s sister recently explained why she started laughing in the middle of his funeral. The former Friends star passed away at 54, nearly three years ago.
The late Hollywood actor’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, appears in Netflix’s new documentary The One About Matthew Perry, helmed by Mary Robertson. According to Bowick, she actually felt Matthew’s presence while she and her family were mourning him.
“He showed up right behind my right shoulder and goes, ‘How f—-d up is this?’” Bowick says in the documentary, according to PageSix. “And I started laughing so hard.” She knew that it was not appropriate for her to laugh during such a “horrible moment,” but she “just started cracking up. And I was like, ‘Yeah man, this is pretty f—-d up,’” she added.
Mia Perry Bowick shares more emotional memories in Netflix’s Matthew Perry documentary
Mia Perry Bowick also mentions in the Netflix documentary that the funeral day was “wrenching and harrowing.” However, she also recalled an emotional moment, especially the one with Matthew Perry’s Friends co-stars.
“I hadn’t seen them in easily 20 years. [Jennifer] Aniston was the first one of them to come up to me and give me a huge hug. But they all did,” she said. Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc were also present at the funeral. “And then, all five of them walked up to the casket holding hands and stood around him, crying.”
Notably, none of Perry’s co-stars from the sitcom feature in the documentary. “I know the Friends actors love Matthew, and grieve Matthew. We did ask them if they would participate, and they decided not to,” said director Robertson. “I think everyone grieves in their own way. And I understand why someone might feel that this isn’t the moment to talk,” she added.
The One About Matthew Perry premieres on Netflix on October 27, 2026.
